Guy z\u201dl died from his injuries after not receiving adequate medical treatment in Hamas captivity, at the age of 26 at the time of his death\u2026<\/p>\n<p>According to the information and intelligence available to us, Bipin Joshi z\u201dl, a Nepalese citizen, was abducted at the age of 23 from a shelter in Kibbutz Alumim by the Hamas terrorist organization. My Administration worked relentlessly to bring hostages home, get relief to Palestinian civilians, and end the war. Photograph: Maxar Technologies Handout\/EPA<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Iran said this morning that Trump\u2019s call for a peace deal with Tehran was inconsistent with Washington\u2019s actions, referring to its strikes on Iranian nuclear sites in June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe desire for peace and dialogue expressed by the US president is at odds with the hostile and criminal behaviour of the United States towards the Iranian people,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/en.mfa.ir\/portal\/newsview\/776490\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the foreign ministry said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHow can one attack the residential areas and nuclear facilities of a country in the midst of political negotiations, kill more than 1,000 people including innocent women and children, and then demand peace and friendship?\u201d the foreign ministry asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tehran accused the US of being \u201ca leading producer of terrorism and a supporter of the terrorist and genocidal Zionist regime\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Iran has insisted it has no intention of developing nuclear weapons but western countries have said they are not convinced of Tehran\u2019s claim its nuclear programme has purely peaceful purposes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:?subject=Gaza ceasefire live: Israelis and Palestinians celebrate hostage and detainee releases as key truce issues remain &amp;body=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2025\/oct\/14\/gaza-ceasefire-israel-hamas-palestine-hostages-detainees-truce-live-news-updates?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-68edf7d68f08cd078f90f160#block-68edf7d68f08cd078f90f160\" type=\"button\" class=\"dcr-1mulgdf\">Share<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The two-state solution would see an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza that would exist alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/israel\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">This Palestinian state would broadly be drawn along the lines that existed prior to the 1967 Arab-Israeli war and would have east Jerusalem as its capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s government has repeatedly rejected a two-state solution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn fact, they effectively had a Palestinian state \u2013 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gaza\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gaza<\/a>. What did they do with that state? Peace? Co-existence?\u201d the Israeli prime minister told the UN general assembly last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNo, they attacked us time and time again, totally unprovoked, they fired rockets into our cities, they murdered our children, they turned Gaza into a terror base from which they committed the October 7 massacre,\u201d he added, referring to the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel two years ago, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage.<\/p>\n<p>Benjamin Netanyahu speaks at the UN\u2019s general assembly in New York in September. I\u2019m not talking about single state or double state or two-state. We\u2019re talking about the rebuilding of Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of people like the one-state solution. Some people like the two-state solutions. We\u2019ll have to see. The US president signed a joint declaration with the leaders of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/egypt\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Egypt<\/a>, Qatar and Turkey intended to turn the ceasefire into a coherent peace plan, amid widespread anxiety over how long the truce will last. Representatives from Israel and Hamas were absent from the signing ceremony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In Israel, Trump addressed the Knesset (parliament) earlier on Monday, urging lawmakers to seize a chance for broader peace in the region and saying a \u201clong nightmare\u201d for both Israelis and Palestinians was over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In Tel Aviv <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/oct\/13\/trump-did-everything-jubilant-israelis-heap-praise-on-us-president-as-hostages-return\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an estimated 65,000 Israelis<\/a> in \u201cHostages Square\u201d cheered when a military helicopter carrying the 20 freed Israelis flew overhead en route to hospital. Live footage of their release and family reunions was broadcast at the square. The bodies of four hostages held in Gaza and handed over to the Red Cross by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/hamas\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hamas<\/a> on Monday were brought back to Israel, the army said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A large crowd also massed in the southern Gazan city of Khan Younis on Monday to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/oct\/13\/palestinian-prisoners-return-home\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">celebrate the return<\/a> of nearly 1,700 Palestinians detained over the course of the war, while in the West Bank capital of Ramallah people welcomed the arrival of 88 Palestinian detainees who had been serving life sentences imposed by Israeli courts. About 160 more were deported through Egypt after their release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The UN warned that Gaza still needed \u201clifesaving aid\u201d. Aid deliveries had begun arriving in Gaza and far more were poised to enter in the coming days, said the UN\u2019s humanitarian relief branch, OCHA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The ceasefire appeared to be holding in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gaza\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gaza<\/a> on Monday after a two-year Israeli military onslaught that has killed nearly 68,000 people following Hamas\u2019s 7 October 2023 attack on Israel in which about 1,200 people were killed and 250 taken hostage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The last Gaza ceasefire broke down after two months in March when Israel resumed its offensive.
