It is a glowing story in a publication Donald Trump<\/a> has long exalted \u2013 but for one catch. The cover picture, the president decreed, \u201cmay be the Worst of All Time\u201d.<\/p>\n

Time magazine\u2019s paean to Trump\u2019s role in brokering a Gaza ceasefire<\/a>, leading its 10 November issue, was accompanied by a photo<\/a> of the president taken from below and with the sun behind his head.<\/p>\n

The result, he says, is \u201csuper bad\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cTime Magazine wrote a relatively good story about me, but the picture may be the Worst of All Time\u201d, Trump wrote on Truth Social.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey \u201cdisappeared\u201d my hair, and then had something floating on top of my head that looked like a floating crown, but an extremely small one. Really weird! I never liked taking pictures from underneath angles, but this is a super bad picture, and deserves to be called out. What are they doing, and why?\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has made no secret of his desire to feature on Time\u2019s cover<\/a> and did so four times last year<\/a>. The obsession has made it as far as Trump\u2019s golf clubs \u2013 in 2017, the magazine asked him to remove mocked up covers on display at some of his properties<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The latest edition\u2019s photo was taken by Graeme Sloane for Bloomberg at the White House on 5 October.<\/p>\n

Its angle did no favours for Trump\u2019s chin and neck \u2013 an opportunity California governor Gavin Newsom did not miss, with his press office tweeting a version<\/a> with the offending area pixelated.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a defence of the president\u2019s appearance has come from unusual quarters: the director of information at Russia\u2019s ministry of foreign affairs stepped in to criticise the \u201cself-incriminating\u201d image choice.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s astonishing: a photograph reveals far more about those who selected it than about the person in it. Only sick people, people obsessed with malice and hatred \u2013perhaps even perverts \u2013 could have chosen such a photo\u201d, Maria Zakharova wrote on Telegram.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd given the complimentary photos of Biden that the same publication used on the cover, despite his physical infirmity, the story is simply self-incriminating for Time\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe actual photo itself technically is good,\u201d she says. \u201cThey picked this image because they wanted trump to look heroic. Staring up at someone gives a sense of their grandeur and Trump\u2019s face actually looks contemplative and almost slightly angelic. It\u2019s not often you see photos of Trump in such a serene moment \u2013 the image has a softness to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s hair appears to \u201cdisappear\u201d because the sunlight behind him has overexposed that part of the image, creating a halo effect, she says. And, while the story\u2019s headline marries well with Trump\u2019s expression in the image, \u201cyou can\u2019t always please the subject matter\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one likes being photographed from below, and while all of the conceptual elements of the image are very strong, the aesthetics are not flattering.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Guardian approached Time magazine<\/a> for comment.<\/p>\n
