Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall marked the band’s 40th anniversary tour by telling an excited fan to “shut it” before shouting how the singer was “sick of hearing it”<\/p>\n

Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall<\/a> demanded one of his fans “shut it” after he shouted out at a gig. The singer became irate when an overexcited fan was deemed to be making too much noise at the concert, which took place at the OVO Arena Wembley on Saturday.<\/p>\n

While the reveller was getting involved in the show, which is part of Simply Red’s 40th anniversary tour, Hucknall took exception to the audience member.<\/p>\n

Singling him out in front of the 12,500 capacity venue, he launched into a furious rant, pointing his finger towards the man and shouting at him. The 65-year-old shouted “shut it” at the fan, before making his way across the stage to add: “Put a sock in it! I’m sick of hearing it.”<\/p>\n

He apologised to the rest of crowd, telling them: “I\u2019m sorry about that but you know, I can\u2019t concentrate – he\u2019s yelling so loud. You\u2019ve come to hear me sing, not him, with the greatest respect.”<\/p>\n

Unfortunately for Mick’s fan, the man knows how to hold a grudge, as Steve Coogan can attest to. The crooner cut his former pal off and hasn’t spoken to him for 20 years after the comic made a friendship-ending dig in a film.<\/p>\n

The Alan Partridge creator spoke about how Mick never spoke to him again after he jibed that his music was “rubbish” in a comment on 24 Hour Party People. The 2002 comedy loosely recalled the story of Factory Records, with Coogan playing 90s music mogul and ITV<\/a> news host Tony Wilson.<\/p>\n

In one scene, he portrays God, appearing in a white toga, with flowing white beard and hair. He is seen giving advice to Factory Records supremo Tony Wilson – also played by Coogan. The comic\u2019s God character tells Wilson: \u201cIt\u2019s a pity you didn\u2019t sign The Smiths.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you were right about Mick Hucknall, his music\u2019s rubbish\u2026 and he\u2019s a ginger.\u201d Coogan, 60, the creator of iconic North Norfolk Digital radio host Alan Partridge, said the once close mates never spoke again.<\/p>\n

Coogan revealed in a 2023 interview<\/a>: \u201cMick Hucknall stopped speaking to me after the joke about God calling his music rubbish.” Before the fallout Hucknall, whose hits include If You Don\u2019t Know Me By Now, had a cameo in Coogan comedy The Tony Ferrino Phenomenon.<\/p>\n

The 1997 show followed a cheesy Portuguese singer – it even saw the pals sing a duet together of Tom Jones hit Help Yourself. Tragically, Hucknall and Coogan’s friendship never recovered.<\/p>\n

In an interview earlier this year, Mick reflected on his potential to take things “way too personally”. He told Classic Pop<\/a>: “Probably that was a deep-seated insecurity at being abandoned by my mother. If something like that happens to you you\u2019re probably not going to be filled with eternal self-confidence and might see everything as being kind of like a battle.”<\/p>\n

He added: “I think people have an image of me as being very arrogant but it\u2019s not always been the case. It might surprise people to know that I can be quite shy.”<\/p>\n
