Three-time major champion Jordan Spieth has hailed The Open Championship<\/a> as \u201cthe best golf tournament in the world\u201d as he looks forward to returning to the site of one of his most dramatic victories \u2014 Royal Birkdale<\/a> \u2014 for the 154th Open in 2026.<\/p>\n

Spieth<\/a>, who famously lifted the Claret Jug at the Southport venue in 2017, says he is relishing the chance to revisit what remains his \u201cmost memorable\u201d and \u201cmost dramatic\u201d triumph.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my opinion it\u2019s the best golf tournament in the world \u2013 and the fans are a huge reason for that,\u201d said Spieth.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s obviously a special place for me. In some ways, it\u2019s the most memorable victory I\u2019ve ever had. It was probably the most dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n

The American became only the second player after Jack Nicklaus<\/a> to win three of the four men\u2019s majors before turning 24 when he claimed the title at Birkdale.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That unforgettable week saw Spieth recover from a nervy back nine wobble \u2014 including a wayward drive on the 13th that ended up on the practice range \u2014 before producing a sensational five-under-par finish over the closing holes to beat Matt Kuchar by three shots.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the moment he was crowned Champion Golfer of the Year, Spieth, now 32, said the memory of lifting the Claret Jug at Royal Birkdale still gives him chills.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember many of the shots that I hit throughout the entire week, I remember the house I stayed in and I obviously remember walking onto the 18th green and being called \u2018Champion Golfer of the Year\u2019,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be able to walk around and really embrace what is the greatest 18th-hole display in all of golf, and receive golf\u2019s most incredible trophy, it was a dream come true for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spieth described the Claret Jug as \u201cthe greatest trophy in all of golf\u201d and reflected on the moment he realised the significance of joining the list of champions to have held it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just found myself thinking \u2018wow, this is the Claret Jug\u2019. I\u2019d held it and celebrated with Zach (Johnson) two years prior at St Andrews \u2013 and fortunately that wasn\u2019t a curse!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re standing there on the 18th, looking at that trophy and the spectacle The R&A creates around you, it\u2019s a real pinch-me moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spieth will once again tee it up at Royal Birkdale from 12\u201319 July 2026, when The Open returns to the famous links for the first time since his victory eight years earlier.<\/p>\n
