{"id":204276,"date":"2025-10-16T13:42:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T13:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/204276\/"},"modified":"2025-10-16T13:42:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T13:42:07","slug":"wet-weather-helps-ancient-tadpole-shrimp-to-hatch-at-mersehead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/204276\/","title":{"rendered":"Wet weather helps ancient tadpole shrimp to hatch at Mersehead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Between 2023 and 2024, Mr Griffin has been rearing shrimps hatched at nearby WWT Caerlaverock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In total, 14 survived to adulthood and soon laid their own eggs in the tanks they were reared in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The sediment in these tanks, containing the eggs, was removed and dried.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In the summers of 2024 and 2025, dried sediment containing more than 20,000 eggs was spread into bare earth of seasonally wet, but at-the-time dry, coastal pools at the RSPB&#8217;s Mersehead reserve on the Solway Coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The pools are located on coastal grassland behind the dunes, further inland from the area where the previous population was lost in the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The pools have since been wetted and dried several times, but this autumn the eggs have finally hatched, more than a year since they were first returned to Mersehead.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Between 2023 and 2024, Mr Griffin has been rearing shrimps hatched at nearby WWT Caerlaverock.
