{"id":204319,"date":"2025-10-16T14:07:18","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T14:07:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/204319\/"},"modified":"2025-10-16T14:07:18","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T14:07:18","slug":"i-tried-doing-this-plank-variation-for-30-days-and-it-relieved-hip-tension-and-improved-my-mobility-in-ways-i-hadnt-expected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/204319\/","title":{"rendered":"I tried doing this plank variation for 30 days and it relieved hip tension and improved my mobility in ways I hadn\u2019t expected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"3a1c6ebf-8f27-4307-b47d-8afd8c874644\">My personal training clients always groan in despair when I program burpees, so sometimes I\u2019m nice and let them do plank walkouts instead.<\/p>\n<p>Like a burpee, it\u2019s a challenging and effective full-body move, which tests your cardio, improves your mobility, strengthens your core and works your shoulder muscles.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"3a1c6ebf-8f27-4307-b47d-8afd8c874644-2\">I\u2019m always trying to improve my mobility and strength, so I decided to add this exercise to my daily routine.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>I did it 10 times a day, for 30 days in a row\u2014here\u2019s what happened.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-my-wrists-got-stronger\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>My wrists got stronger<\/p>\n<p id=\"8497f8c6-ccd0-4ecb-88e7-a3318c22e006\">After doing plank walkouts for several days, I noticed that opening pickle jars and bottles felt easier.<\/p>\n<p>This is probably because plank walkouts are great for wrist strength, as they force you to support your bodyweight on your hands, fortifying muscles around the joint.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve struggled with tendonitis for nearly a decade and can sometimes find plank moves difficult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Start your week with achievable workout ideas, health tips and wellbeing advice in your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>However, I\u2019m hoping that doing this move when I\u2019m not in a flare-up will strengthen my wrists and ward off future issues.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-my-balance-and-core-strength-improved\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>My balance and core strength improved<\/p>\n<p id=\"2f724632-3de8-479f-8340-277b342efe66\">Getting down to the floor and back up again\u2014without excessively rocking my body side to side\u2014challenged both my core muscles and my balance.<\/p>\n<p>After a couple of weeks of doing the move, I noticed that I was finding it easier to do unilateral (one-sided) exercises, like a single-leg squat and lunges.<\/p>\n<p>This could be influenced by other factors in my training, but I think my enhanced core strength and balance played a part.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-my-hip-mobility-improved\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>My hip mobility improved<\/p>\n<p id=\"abc55945-a6c1-4d76-be0f-2851c52c8938\">The plank walkout trains the body to hinge at the hips rather than round the back.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a useful movement pattern to practice, as it\u2019s something we do in everyday life and during strength moves like the deadlift.<\/p>\n<p>After doing the exercise for 30 days, I was able to lean over the bath to wash my daughter\u2019s hair more comfortably, without any aches or tension in my hips and lower back.<\/p>\n<p>I also found my kettlebell swing technique improved as the hip hinge movement felt more intuitive.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-it-helped-me-lift-heavier\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>It helped me lift heavier <\/p>\n<p id=\"c7e0f8d4-4ba3-4bdd-8157-52011d202228\">I\u2019ve been trying to increase the weight I can press overhead, and I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly doing regular plank walkouts helped.<\/p>\n<p>This is because the plank walkout strengthened my shoulder muscles, which made the overhead press feel easier and more fluid.<\/p>\n<p>After two weeks of doing the exercise, I went from shoulder pressing 10kg\/ 22lbs to 12kg\/26lbs.
