First, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/newly-discovered-comet-lemmon-may-be-visible-to-the-naked-eye-this-month-but-it-will-look-more-like-a-lime\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/newly-discovered-comet-lemmon-may-be-visible-to-the-naked-eye-this-month-but-it-will-look-more-like-a-lime\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">comet Lemmon<\/a> will be at its most visible between October 13-23 and could be as bright as Magnitude 4, meaning there\u2019s a chance it could be visible with the naked eye. October 21 will be the ideal night to see it, thanks to the new moon, and you might even catch the Orionids meteor shower, too.<\/p>\n<p>Then, the first half of November and will be the ideal time to take long exposures of comet <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/3i-atlas-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-interstellar-visitor-shooting-through-the-solar-system\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/3i-atlas-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-interstellar-visitor-shooting-through-the-solar-system\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3I\/ATLAS<\/a> \u2014 although at a predicted Magnitude 10, you\u2019ll still need a camera, binoculars or telescope to be able to see it.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"f8371164-ad76-4f62-900c-0abde9c4180f-2\">Photographing a comet isn\u2019t so different from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/how-to-photograph-the-moon\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/how-to-photograph-the-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shooting the moon<\/a> or a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/how-to-photograph-a-meteor-shower\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/how-to-photograph-a-meteor-shower\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">meteor shower<\/a>, but it\u2019s far more thrilling, since comets are often once-in-a-lifetime sights \u2014 comet Lemmon won\u2019t be around again for another 1,150 years! That said, some are <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/best-astrophotography-cameras\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/best-astrophotography-cameras\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">better suited to astrophotography<\/a> than others. Some high-end cameras \u2014 like our favorite astrophotography camera, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/technology\/nikon-z8-review\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/technology\/nikon-z8-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nikon Z8<\/a> \u2014 have a dedicated astrophotography mode designed for low-light shooting, with other models like the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/sony-a7-iv-review\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/sony-a7-iv-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sony A7 IV<\/a> boosting the brightness of the monitor to help with composing your shot in the dark. We also love the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/technology\/om-system-om-1-ii-review\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/technology\/om-system-om-1-ii-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OM System OM-1 Mark II<\/a> for comets and meteor showers specifically, where Live Composite really comes into its own for long exposures.<\/p>\n<p>The two most important factors you need to have in a camera are good noise handling (which, annoyingly, is something you can only really find out from actually using it), and enough controls on the body to adjust the aperture, shutter speed and ISO independently to avoid having to dive into the menus. This is a small but useful thing to have, as it makes manual shooting ten times easier when you\u2019re out in the field and need to make adjustments. Most astro lenses are prime lenses, but wide-angle zooms will also work (provided they have a wide aperture) and open up more composition possibilities with the ability to zoom in and out. You don\u2019t need to spend a fortune, but if you can afford to invest in a good quality tripod, it\u2019ll last you longer and be constructed from sturdier and more rugged materials. (Image credit: Javier Zayas Photography via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p id=\"f654fc00-3999-4236-b872-1b3180a377c2\">Shooting a comet is very similar to most other types of astrophotography, which is great news if you already know what you\u2019re doing. Shoot in manual mode so you can adjust all your settings yourself, and you\u2019ll need to set your lens to manual focus. Set your aperture to as wide as it can go in order to let the most light in, and divide 500 by your lens\u2019 focal length to determine the best shutter speed to prevent unwanted star trails.<\/p>\n<p>Your ISO should be somewhere between 800 and 3,200, depending on the brightness of the comet and the amount of light pollution or ambient light. Start around ISO 800 and increase gradually \u2014 it\u2019s better to take a few test shots than risk too much noise. This can be anything \u2014 a mountain, a tree, bridge or a landmark works beautifully. With a pair of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/best-binoculars-for-stargazing\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/best-binoculars-for-stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">best stargazing binoculars<\/a>, you can spot the comet and compose your shot around it, rather than having to rely on trial and error. Plus, you can spend time enjoying the view for the 20-or-so seconds your camera is taking the photo.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to use binoculars handheld, go for 8&#215;42, 10&#215;42 or 10&#215;50. If you have a second tripod, you can power up to a 12x,15x or even 20x magnification.
