\n\t\u201cRoofman<\/a>\u201d is leaning into the laughs.<\/p>\n

\n\tParamount Pictures will submit the crowd-pleasing crime film \u201cRoofman\u201d for consideration in the best motion picture \u2013 musical or comedy category at the 83rd Annual Golden Globe Awards, Variety has learned exclusively.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film, directed by Derek Cianfrance and starring Channing Tatum<\/a> and Kirsten Dunst<\/a>, has been gaining awards-season momentum since its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it received a rare standing ovation.<\/p>\n

\n\tBased on the unbelievable true story of Jeffrey Manchester, \u201cRoofman\u201d follows a former Army Ranger (Tatum) who begins robbing McDonald\u2019s restaurants by cutting through their roofs \u2014 later hiding inside a Toys \u201cR\u201d Us for months after a prison escape. The story takes a turn when Manchester falls for a single mother, Leigh (Dunst), sparking a charming yet suspenseful game of cat and mouse.<\/p>\n

\n\tTatum will be submitted for lead actor (comedy or musical). If nominated, it would mark the actor\u2019s first major nod of his career, despite a wide-ranging body of work across comedy, action, and drama movies such as \u201cFoxcatcher\u201d and the \u201cJump Street\u201d series. His performance has been widely hailed as a career-best, drawing a TIFF Tribute Performer Award.<\/p>\n

\n\tDunst, a four-time Golden Globe nominee, will be submitted for supporting actress. Her turn as Leigh has also been heavily praised for its emotional depth and comedic timing. The film also features an ensemble cast including Peter Dinklage, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple and Uzo Aduba, all of which will be submitted in their respective supporting acting categories. <\/p>\n

\n\tMultiple Golden Globe voters and international audiences have screened \u201cRoofman\u201d through festival screenings in Toronto, Greece, Belgium, Switzerland and London, in addition to its U.S. premiere in Los Angeles. The overwhelming reception has focused on the film\u2019s unexpected humor and tonal originality, despite its true-crime origins.<\/p>\n

\n\tAhead of the Toronto premiere, the film landed Tatum and Cianfrance on the cover of Variety\u2019s TIFF issue<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tCianfrance, who co-wrote the screenplay with Kirt Gunn, will be submitted for director and screenplay consideration. Cianfrance is a past DGA Award winner for helming commercials for Nike Gold and Powerade in 2016, and an Oscar and WGA nominee for the drama \u201cSound of Metal\u201d (2020), which he shared with co-writers Darius Marder and Abraham Marder. Some of his other past notable titles include the crime drama \u201cThe Place Beyond the Pines\u201d (2012) and the raw love story \u201cBlue Valentine\u201d (2010) which received a best actress nom for Michelle Williams.<\/p>\n

\n\tCurrently certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an 84% rating, \u201cRoofman\u201d was released domestically on Oct. 10.<\/p>\n
