Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), a secure method of encrypting data, requires a reliable source of single photons to work effectively. Photarix is working on creating Quantum Ring Single-Photon Light-Emitting Diodes (QR SPLEDs) \u2013 a new type of light source that can overcome this barrier.<\/p>\n
QR SPLEDs are able to emit single photons at the specific wavelengths required for fiber-optic networks in a compact, cost-effective format that works at, or close to, room temperature.<\/p>\n
PhD student Gizem Acar Tekin, now CEO at Photarix, started the company following physics research she completed at Lancaster and now works alongside Professor Manus Hayne as Chief Scientific Officer. Her original project received support from the European Commission\u2019s Horizon 2020 program.<\/p>\n
More recently, the team entered CyberASAP, an Innovate-UK-funded scheme which supports academic researchers hoping to turn their work into commercially-viable businesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n
After this, Photarix joined NW CyberCom, an initiative aiming to unlock the North West\u2019s cybersecurity potential by supporting research into products and services. It was the first Lancaster University spin-out to launch through the scheme.<\/p>\n

The UK Government\u2019s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology has recently invited Photarix to host a stand at the International Cyber Expo 2026 in London, where CEO Acar Tekin will give a talk.<\/p>\n
