{"id":206725,"date":"2025-10-17T14:42:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T14:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/206725\/"},"modified":"2025-10-17T14:42:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T14:42:09","slug":"orionids-2025-meteor-shower-caused-by-halleys-comet-peaks-as-two-new-comets-cross-the-sky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/206725\/","title":{"rendered":"Orionids 2025: Meteor shower caused by Halley&#8217;s Comet peaks as two new comets cross the sky"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"378454cc-974c-4ad8-9183-317d2043a07b\">Skywatchers are set for something special after dark on Monday, Oct. 20, through Tuesday, Oct. 21, when an annual meteor shower produced by Halley&#8217;s Comet peaks just as two recently discovered comets reach their brightest points in the night sky.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amsmeteors.org\/meteor-showers\/meteor-shower-calendar\/#Orionids\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.amsmeteors.org\/meteor-showers\/meteor-shower-calendar\/#Orionids\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">American Meteor Society<\/a>, the Orionid meteor shower runs from Oct. 2 through Nov. 7, peaking on Oct. 20 to Oct. 21. That coincides with a new moon \u2014 when the moon is between Earth and the sun and is absent from the night sky \u2014 meaning the rare sky show should benefit from profound darkness. However, clear weather will still be required to see meteors and the brightening comets <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/newly-discovered-comet-lemmon-may-be-visible-to-the-naked-eye-this-month-but-it-will-look-more-like-a-lime\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/newly-discovered-comet-lemmon-may-be-visible-to-the-naked-eye-this-month-but-it-will-look-more-like-a-lime\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lemmon<\/a> (C\/2025 A6) and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/skywatching-alert-see-2-bright-comets-on-the-same-night-as-a-meteor-shower-this-october\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/skywatching-alert-see-2-bright-comets-on-the-same-night-as-a-meteor-shower-this-october\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SWAN<\/a> (C\/2025 R2).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"378454cc-974c-4ad8-9183-317d2043a07b-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The Orionids are the main event in fall&#8217;s &#8220;meteor season,&#8221; during which a host of minor meteor showers take place. Around 20 &#8220;shooting stars&#8221; per hour are expected during the Orionids&#8217; peak, with meteors hitting Earth&#8217;s atmosphere at a speed of 41 miles per second (66 kilometers per second). The &#8220;shooting stars&#8221; can occur anywhere in the night sky, but if you trace them backwards, they will appear to come from a region of the night sky just north of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/astronomers-share-best-ever-evidence-that-betelgeuse-has-a-secret-companion-star-and-theyve-nicknamed-it-her-bracelet\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/astronomers-share-best-ever-evidence-that-betelgeuse-has-a-secret-companion-star-and-theyve-nicknamed-it-her-bracelet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bright reddish star Betelgeuse<\/a> in the constellation Orion \u2014 hence the shower&#8217;s name. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/meteors-meteorites\/orionids\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/meteors-meteorites\/orionids\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NASA<\/a> calls the Orionids one of the most beautiful showers of the year.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"19cb9a93-a379-4411-8cd5-4a55f77896b5\">Orionids are the product of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/halleys-comet-begins-its-return-journey-to-earth-saturday\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/halleys-comet-begins-its-return-journey-to-earth-saturday\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Halley&#8217;s Comet<\/a>, which was last seen in the inner <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-system\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-system\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a> in 1986 and will next be seen in 2061. The other meteor shower caused by Halley&#8217;s Comet is April&#8217;s Eta Aquariids.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d4dd0cc6-f752-405c-8dab-71d1f41eece4\">While the Orionid meteor shower will be best seen in the hours after midnight on Tuesday, Oct. 21, the viewing window for the comets will take place much earlier the previous evening. Both comets will be in the post-sunset night sky and will be best seen an hour and a half after sunset \u2014 primarily with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/best-binoculars\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/best-binoculars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stargazing binoculars<\/a>, but perhaps with the naked eye too if viewed from a dark sky site.<\/p>\n<p>Comet Lemmon, which was discovered in January by the Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter observatory in Arizona&#8217;s Santa Catalina Mountains, will be low in the northwest between the end of the handle of the Big Dipper and the bright star Arcturus.
