{"id":208492,"date":"2025-10-18T09:10:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-18T09:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/208492\/"},"modified":"2025-10-18T09:10:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-18T09:10:10","slug":"jamie-melham-creates-caulfield-cup-history-after-riding-half-yours-to-victory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/208492\/","title":{"rendered":"Jamie Melham creates Caulfield Cup history after riding Half Yours to victory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Jamie Melham has broken new ground as the first female jockey to win the Caulfield Cup (2,400 metres) in its 149-year history, steering favourite Half Yours to victory in the $5 million handicap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Trained by father-and-son duo Tony and Calvin McEvoy, Half Yours beat home River Of Stars in emphatic fashion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Five-year-old Half Yours \u2014 the son of bargain-priced sire St Jean \u2014 gave Melham her 17th Group 1 triumph and first in one of the Melbourne spring majors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Valiant King was third home and Presage Nocturne was fourth, while Adelaide River faded after leading by as much as seven lengths.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Melham, one of Australia&#8217;s leading jockeys, was in tears after the race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Just hearing you say &#8216;Caulfield Cup&#8217; is going to make me cry,&#8221; Melham said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve had an incredible career and ridden 17 Group 1s now, but that major has obviously eluded me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I just wanted to get one, but now I want maybe three more, maybe a Melbourne Cup, and this horse is going to run the trip out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Jamie Melham rides Half Yours to Caulfield Cup win.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/f8c42c9bcdc040e09abbbfc12ed25ef6\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Jamie Melham is the first female jockey to win the Caulfield Cup. (AAP: James Ross)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Melham said she was not distracted by the fact Half Yours entered the race as favourite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I just wanted to come out here and ride him and give him the best ride I could because I knew he was the best horse in the race,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But everything was perfect. It worked out perfectly for him and he had to dig deep and he&#8217;s an absolute superstar horse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;What Tony and Calvin have done with him, they&#8217;ve just made this absolute professional of a horse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Half Yours was sold last November for $305,000 at a time when he had given little indication he would develop into a star.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But the McEvoys saw potential and have been rewarded handsomely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tony McEvoy came agonisingly close to winning the Caulfield Cup in 2002 with Fields Of Omagh, narrowly beaten by Northerly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Melham had also fallen short in three previous rides, including a fourth aboard Prince Of Arran in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This is why we do it, to have a runner in these, and they&#8217;re bloody hard to win,&#8221; Tony McEovy said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-18\/ka-ying-rising-wins-the-everest\/105907784\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ka Ying Rising wins The Everest<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ka Ying Rising produces a storming finish to claim victory in the world&#8217;s richest horse race, The Everest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That was incredible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It was the biggest win of Calvin McEvoy&#8217;s young training career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;What a proud moment for me, to be able to do it with Calv,&#8221; Tony McEvoy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s really enjoyable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Earlier on Saturday, Blake Shinn guided Ole Dancer to victory in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1,600m) for Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ole Dancer overhauled odds-on favourite Apocalyptic in a thrilling finish, leaving jockey Mark Zahra runner-up in the classic for the fifth time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It was an exciting race, a thrilling race for me to even ride in,&#8221; Shinn said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Peter and Kat, you can just trust their horse&#8217;s fitness, and when the pressure came on, she came to the fore.
