But there\u2019s a buzzy one I\u2019m particularly intrigued by these days. CoQ10 (or co-enzyme Q10, also called ubiquinone and ubiquinol), is kind of like a good pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/g46041761\/best-running-shoes-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/g46041761\/best-running-shoes-women\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"sneakers\" data-node-id=\"0.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sneakers<\/a> because it\u2019s versatile. Like snappy kicks that can take you from your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a63386064\/exercise-sleep-deprivation-morning-workout-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a63386064\/exercise-sleep-deprivation-morning-workout-benefits\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"morning runs\" data-node-id=\"0.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">morning runs<\/a> to afternoon brunches, the supp du jour, CoQ10, can also do a lot in your body, as it has many supposed benefits.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">A quick primer: You\u2019ve probably heard of mitochondria, or the powerhouse of your cells, which is where energy\u2014called ATP or adenosine triphosphate\u2014comes from. \u201cATP is basically how your body stores and uses energy,\u201d says Zachary Mulvihill, MD, an integrative medicine specialist. And remember what I said about it being versatile? CoQ10 is said to have potential benefits such as helping with cardiovascular health, fertility, and other age-related declining bodily factors. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">You produce the most CoQ10 in your mid-twenties, Dr. Mulvihill says, and \u201cby the time you&#8217;re 65, you produce about half that amount.\u201d It\u2019s unclear whether this drop is due to aging itself, or from inflammatory lifestyle factors, like a lack of sleep, that can deplete antioxidants. Regardless, less CoQ10 could mean that the process of converting food into ATP is less efficient, which could impact various bodily systems, per Aarti Soorya, MD, an integrative medicine physician. Also, CoQ10 helps decrease inflammation, she adds.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Plus, as you age, you also collect more oxidative stress, says Dr. Mulvihill. Oxidative stress can cause cell and tissue damage, and ultimately might lead to chronic conditions like cardiovascular and neurological issues, per <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/oxidative-stress\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/oxidative-stress\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"the Cleveland Clinic\" data-node-id=\"7.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the Cleveland Clinic<\/a>. CoQ10 is an antioxidant that discards free radicals that cause oxidative stress and can contribute to aging, says Dr. Mulvihill.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">So, should every woman over 40 be taking a CoQ10 supp? Ahead, read up on the many potential benefits of CoQ10 supplementation, plus possible risks, and who should take it.<\/p>\n<p>Health Benefits Of CoQ10 Supplementation<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Thanks to CoQ10\u2019s ability to assist the mitochondria in our cells to make more energy and prevent excess free radicals that lead to inflammation and cellular damage, the supp may be worthwhile for the following health benefits.<\/p>\n<p>It can be helpful for those with heart conditions.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Since CoQ10 is essential for your body to make energy, it&#8217;s the most prevalent in the tissues that use the most energy, a.k.a., your heart, says Dr. Mulvihill. A majority of research on CoQ10 is around its impact on cardiovascular disease\u2014including heart failure, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">CoQ10 supplementation can decrease vascular stiffness and hypertension (high blood pressure), reduce oxidative stress (an imbalance in free radicals and antioxidants that can lead to cell damage, per the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/oxidative-stress\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/oxidative-stress\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Cleveland Clinic\" data-node-id=\"16.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>) and mortality from cardiovascular causes, per a 2021 study in <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8151454\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8151454\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Antioxidants\" data-node-id=\"16.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Antioxidants<\/a>. This supp can also improve the outcome of coronary artery bypass graft surgeries, including shorter hospital stays for those who supplemented with CoQ10, the study found. <\/p>\n<p>It might be helpful for people on statins. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Patients with cardiovascular disease are sometimes prescribed statins, a medication that lowers cholesterol, Dr. Mulvihill adds. However, your body produces CoQ10 in the same pathway that statins block, which can create muscle pain as a side effect. So, CoQ10 supplements can help try to prevent this pain, he says.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Research in this area is mixed, as 2020 research in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0021915020301386\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0021915020301386\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Atherosclerosis\" data-node-id=\"19.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Atherosclerosis<\/a> shows that CoQ10 does not significantly help with muscle pain. However, in Dr. Mulvihill\u2019s clinical experience, he believes people can benefit from CoQ10 supplementation. <\/p>\n<p>It could be useful for improving fertility for women over 30. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">As you get older, egg quality decreases and CoQ10 production slows down, says Dr. Mulvihill. CoQ10 might &#8220;help maintain your egg quality and reduce the age-related decline in egg quality and quantity,&#8221; he says. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">This decline is often linked to a decrease in mitochondrial function and, since CoQ10 helps improve mitochondrial function, in turn it can support healthier eggs and possibly improve fertility, Dr. Mulvihill adds, particularly for women over 30 and\/or who are trying to get pregnant or are freezing their eggs. It can also help to try a CoQ10 supplement while you&#8217;re undergoing fertility treatment like IVF, as long as you have approval from your physician, adds Dr. Soorya.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">While more research in this field needs to be done to truly determine whether CoQ10 can benefit your fertility, some research seems promising: A 2024 study in <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11345374\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11345374\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Advances in Nutrition\" data-node-id=\"23.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Advances in Nutrition<\/a> found that women who supplemented with CoQ10 were more likely to become pregnant compared to those who took a placebo.<\/p>\n<p>It could help reduce the frequency and duration of migraines.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cThere are small studies that show it may reduce migraine headaches, which are much more common in women,\u201d Dr. Mulvilhill says. For example, 2021 research in <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7786797\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7786797\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"BMJ Open\" data-node-id=\"25.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BMJ Open<\/a> concluded that CoQ10 supplementation might help reduce the duration and frequency of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a40756970\/how-to-get-rid-of-a-migraine-fast\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a40756970\/how-to-get-rid-of-a-migraine-fast\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"migraine\" data-node-id=\"25.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">migraine<\/a> attacks. (However, the research found that CoQ10 supplementation did not appear to significantly reduce the severity of migraines.)<\/p>\n<p>It might help with blood sugar regulation.<\/p>\n<p id=\"it-might-help-with-blood-sugar-regulation\" data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"body-text css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">If a patient has diabetes, Dr. Mulvihill might talk to them about taking CoQ10 supplements, since they\u2019ve been shown to have a beneficial effect on glycemic control, particularly among those who are diabetic. Having better blood sugar regulation and glycemic control can help those who are diabetic reduce morbidity and increase their life expectancy and quality of life, according to a 2022 study in <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9304683\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9304683\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Cureus\" data-node-id=\"27.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cureus<\/a>. As little as 100 milligrams a day of CoQ10 could yield these benefits, per 2022 research in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/eclinm\/article\/PIIS2589-5370(22)00332-7\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/eclinm\/article\/PIIS2589-5370(22)00332-7\/fulltext\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"eClinicalMedicine\" data-node-id=\"27.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">eClinicalMedicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It could help people manage fibromyalgia.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"29\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Some evidence shows that CoQ10 supps may help with fibromyalgia, which is a muscle pain disorder that\u2019s more common in women, Dr. Mulvihill says. The pain typically comes from an unknown source and is widespread, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niams.nih.gov\/health-topics\/fibromyalgia\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.niams.nih.gov\/health-topics\/fibromyalgia\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"NIH\" data-node-id=\"29.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NIH<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"30\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9598746\/#sec6-antioxidants-11-01969\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9598746\/#sec6-antioxidants-11-01969\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Some research\" data-node-id=\"30.0\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Some research<\/a> calls CoQ10 the \u201cgold standard supplement\u201d for reducing pain from fibromyalgia. Supplementing CoQ10 in addition to keeping up healthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/beauty\/g42041644\/best-toothpaste-tablets\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/beauty\/g42041644\/best-toothpaste-tablets\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"oral hygiene practices\" data-node-id=\"32.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">oral hygiene practices<\/a> can potentially help both of these infections, according to 2023 research in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S221343442200041X\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S221343442200041X\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"PharmaNutrition\" data-node-id=\"32.7\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PharmaNutrition<\/a>, but more research is needed to definitively prove this. <\/p>\n<p>It could potentially help endurance athletes with recovery.<\/p>\n<p id=\"it-could-potentially-help-endurance-athletes-with-recovery-coq10-is-popular-among-endurance-athletes-because-they-may-feel-like-its-helping-replenish-their-energy-says-dr-mulvihill-whether-it-truly-is-helping-them-or-not-is-unclear-because-theres-not-good-research-to-validate-that-and-there-probably-never-will-be-he-says\" data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"34\" class=\"body-text css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cCoQ10 is popular among endurance athletes\u201d because they may feel like it\u2019s helping replenish their energy, says Dr. Mulvihill. \u201cWhether it truly is helping them or not is unclear because there\u2019s not good research to validate that, and there probably never will be,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"36\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">If you\u2019re undergoing a period where your body is taking on a lot of stress, like you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a40216944\/marathon-training-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a40216944\/marathon-training-plan\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"training for a marathon\" data-node-id=\"36.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">training for a marathon<\/a>, \u201cthat could be a temporary time to [take CoQ10] as an adjunct treatment to help mitigate the oxidative stress that can happen on the body,\u201d Dr. Soorya adds. Dr. Mulvill agrees, saying there\u2019s no harm in taking it for endurance training, as long as you\u2019re not on any medications it might interact with. (More on that later!)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"37\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Just try not to rely on CoQ10 for energy, Dr. Soorya says. Instead, you should be making the right lifestyle choices, like getting lots of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a63941290\/blue-light-sleep-health-benefits-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a63941290\/blue-light-sleep-health-benefits-study\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"sleep\" data-node-id=\"37.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sleep<\/a> and eating nutritiously before supplementing, she says.<\/p>\n<p>Potential Risks Of CoQ10 Supplementation<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"39\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Everyone should talk to their doctor before starting a new supplement, especially if you\u2019re considering CoQ10 and you have congestive heart failure, or you\u2019re taking medications that might have interactions, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/supplement\/coenzyme-q10\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/supplement\/coenzyme-q10\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"chemotherapy, blood thinning, or blood pressure medications\" data-node-id=\"39.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">chemotherapy, blood thinning, or blood pressure medications<\/a>, says Dr. Mulvihill. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"40\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cCoQ10 may reduce blood pressure, so if you are on medications for hypertension, this needs to be monitored closely,\u201d Dr. Soorya says. It can also make anticoagulants (blood thinning agents) less effective and increase your chances of clots, as well as interact with insulin (which may affect those who are diabetic,) he adds. One other contraindication: Since supplements are processed through the liver and kidneys, people with issues with either organ should not take supplements without a doctor\u2019s supervision, Dr. Soorya adds. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"41\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Otherwise, at low doses\u2014like 100 to 120 milligrams\u2014for a few months at a time, CoQ10 seems \u201cexceedingly safe and very low-risk to try,\u201d especially if you\u2019re looking to reap benefits in the fertility, migraine, or fibromyalgia realms. Just make sure the CoQ10 is from a reputable brand (like one that has a third-party testing process to verify the ingredients), and that it\u2019s okay with your primary care doctor, Dr. Mulvihill says. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"42\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Side effects from low doses tend to be rare, but may include mild gastrointestinal issues like nausea or diarrhea, he adds. Sleep disturbances, including a harder time falling asleep and waking up more in the middle of the night, have also been reported, per Dr. Soorya. <\/p>\n<p>If\u2014And How\u2014You Should Take CoQ10<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"44\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Neither Dr. Mulvihill nor Dr. Soorya would recommend everyone take CoQ10. Instead, Dr. Mulvihill usually recommends CoQ10 supplementation to these specific patients with:<\/p>\n<p>Heart disease, especially if they\u2019re on a statinHigh blood pressureMigrainesDiabetesFibromyalgiaGingivitisThose thinking about preserving their fertility<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"46\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">If you do decide to try CoQ10 supplements and have cleared it with your doctor, Dr. Mulvihill says about 100-120 milligrams a day should be sufficient. The time of day you take it isn\u2019t overly important, but you might want to take it in the morning along with a source of fat (like a fish oil supplement or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/food\/a19495380\/how-many-calories-in-an-avocado\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/food\/a19495380\/how-many-calories-in-an-avocado\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"avocado\" data-node-id=\"46.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">avocado<\/a>) as it\u2019s a fat-soluble nutrient, so it\u2019ll be absorbed easier into the body with a second fat. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"47\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Another tip: Try the CoQ10 supplement for three months, then stop for a couple of weeks to gauge whether you felt better while you were taking it, Dr. Mulvihill adds. (FYI: While CoQ10 does exist in some foods like meat and fatty fish, it\u2019s not in sufficient enough doses to make a CoQ10-focused diet worthwhile.)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"48\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">But I\u2019d be remiss not to also mention that \u201csupplements are there to supplement your diet and lifestyle,\u201d says Dr. Mulvihill.
