{"id":212681,"date":"2025-10-20T07:51:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T07:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/212681\/"},"modified":"2025-10-20T07:51:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T07:51:11","slug":"sanae-takaichi-on-track-to-become-japans-first-female-prime-minister-after-reportedly-agreeing-to-new-coalition-japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/212681\/","title":{"rendered":"Sanae Takaichi on track to become Japan\u2019s first female prime minister after reportedly agreeing to new coalition | Japan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/audio\/2025\/oct\/13\/could-japan-get-its-own-thatcher-this-week-full-story-podcast\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sanae Takaichi<\/a> has moved a step closer to becoming Japan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/oct\/04\/sanae-takaichi-the-new-leader-of-japans-liberal-democratic-party-who-cites-thatcher-as-an-influence\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first female prime minister<\/a>, after her party reportedly agreed to form a new coalition with a minor party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Officials on Monday confirmed media reports that Takaichi\u2019s Liberal Democratic party (LDP) would join forces with the rightwing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/nov\/01\/japan-election-rightwing-populists-sweep-vote-in-osaka\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nippon Ishin<\/a> (Japan Innovation party), which shares her hawkish stance on China and opposition to mass migration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cToday we will sign the agreement to launch a coalition government,\u201d Hirofumi Yoshimura, Ishin\u2019s co-leader, told reporters, adding that the agreement would be formalised later in the day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAfter giving it careful thought last night, I telephoned President Takaichi this morning to reach a coalition agreement. I conveyed that we should work together to move <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/japan\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Japan<\/a> forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The deal ends a fortnight of uncertainty over Takaichi\u2019s attempt to become Japan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/oct\/04\/sanae-takaichi-expected-to-become-japans-first-female-pm-after-winning-ruling-party-leadership\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first female prime minister<\/a> \u2013 a post she was expected to fill after winning a vote to lead the LDP earlier this month after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/sep\/07\/japan-pm-shigeru-ishiba-resign\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resignation<\/a> of the outgoing prime minister, Shigeru Ishiba.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But her bid was almost derailed when the LDP\u2019s partner of 26 years, Komeito, left the coalition, triggering an unsuccessful attempt by opposition parties to choose a unified candidate who would lead a rainbow coalition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Komeito, which is backed by the Buddhist organisation Soka Gakkai, opposes Takaichi\u2019s hawkish views on security and said the LDP had failed to address a damaging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/apr\/28\/anger-at-party-funding-scandal-in-japan-threatens-to-bring-down-pm-kishida\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">funding scandal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The scandal, combined with the cost-of-living crisis, contributed to two bruising elections for the LDP in the past 12 months in which the then ruling coalition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jul\/20\/apan-pm-election-result-exit-polls-predict-loss-of-upper-house\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost its majorities<\/a> in both houses of parliament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">MPs will vote for a new prime minister \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/japan\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Japan<\/a>\u2019s fifth in as many years \u2013 on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">With a combined 231 seats, the new coalition are still two seats short of a majority in the powerful lower house, but Takaichi is the strong favourite to win since she will only need more support than the other candidate if there is a runoff vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Her expected appointment will come just days before Donald Trump arrives in Japan for a two-day visit, and Takaichi makes her international debut as prime minister at the Apec summit in South Korea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Ishin leadership is hoping to win concessions in return for its decision to prop up an LDP-led administration. Yoshimura has described as \u201cabsolute requirements\u201d his party\u2019s demands to make Osaka \u2013 where Ishin has its base \u2013 a secondary capital in the event of a natural disaster or other emergency in Tokyo, and to reform social security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ishin has also called for the 10% consumption (sales) tax to be abolished for food, and for a ban on corporate and organisational donations to political parties \u2013 a demand opposed by many in the LDP, the Kyodo news agency said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Despite the coalition breakthrough, Takaichi, a hardline conservative who opposes same-sex marriages and reigning female empresses, will inherit a minority government dependent on opposition groups to pass legislation, including an upcoming supplementary budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Takaichi has called for higher spending and tax cuts to help consumers through rising inflation \u2013 policies that could quickly lead to friction with Ishin, which supports small government and lower spending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Like her mentor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jul\/08\/shinzo-abe-japans-former-prime-minister-dies-after-being-shot\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shinzo Abe<\/a>, Takaichi wants to revise Japan\u2019s \u201cpacifist\u201d postwar constitution to formally recognise the role of its military, known as the self-defence forces.
