Fantasy Premier League (FPL) confirmed on Sunday that Antoine Semenyo (\u00a38.0m) would not get an assist for Bournemouth\u2019s first goal in Gameweek 8.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve seen a few people confused about the reasoning for this, so we thought we\u2019d clarify \u2013 to the best we can! \u2013 in this article.<\/p>\n

FPL\u2019S REASONING<\/p>\n

After the initial \u2018TBC\u2019<\/a> on Eli Junior Kroupi\u2018s (\u00a34.5m) first goal, FPL came to a final decision some 24 hours later.<\/p>\n

Their message was as follows:<\/p>\n

The Scout: After review, no assist is awarded for Kroupi Junior’s first goal against Crystal Palace. The contact from Antoine Semenyo was recorded as an inadvertent touch that does not directly lead to the goal https:\/\/t.co\/zQq4U9t8jO<\/a><\/p>\n

In Opta-speak (for it is the data collectors who make the calls on each match event), an inadvertent touch is when the ball bounces off a player and there is no intentional pass or shot.<\/p>\n

\u2018INADVERTENT TOUCH\u2019 \u2013 THE CONFUSION<\/p>\n

But, you may be thinking, don\u2019t the FPL rules<\/a> say that an \u2018inadvertent touch\u2019 can still lead to an assist?<\/p>\n

They sure do:<\/p>\n

However, further down the same page<\/a>, there\u2019s this message:<\/p>\n

By \u2018directly\u2019, it means not touching an opponent en route to the goalscorer.<\/p>\n

APPLYING THE RULE IN SEMENYO\u2019S CASE<\/p>\n

In this case, Justin Kluivert\u2018s (\u00a37.0m) corner is whipped in, comes off Semenyo\u2019s back, hits a Palace defender, and loops up to Kroupi to nod in on the goalline:<\/p>\n

To sum it all up, Opta were not counting Semenyo\u2019s touch as a shot or attempted pass. Therefore, it goes down as an inadvertent touch.<\/p>\n

And because it hits a Palace defender before reaching Kroupi, the rules say no assist.<\/p>\n

FPL\u2019s relaxation of the assist rules<\/a> before the start of 2025\/26 means we\u2019ve had far fewer contentious calls this season \u2013 but Saturday\u2019s example just goes to show that where there\u2019s any subjectivity left in a decision (the subjectivity here being Opta deeming Semenyo not shooting\/passing), there\u2019ll always be room for dispute.<\/p>\n
