Its images have illuminated how galaxies form, evolve and recycle their material through generations of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/2962-galactic-birth-control-unknown-factor-prevents-star-formation.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/2962-galactic-birth-control-unknown-factor-prevents-star-formation.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">star birth<\/a> and death.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"b70aae2c-ee29-4a78-8d59-5773d52cde6e-1\">In Hubble&#8217;s recent image, NGC 6951 unfurls its graceful spiral arms, covered in red nebulae glowing with hydrogen gas, a key fuel for new stars.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-d2e16e8e-2200-4098-aa1f-0a7876b7c012\"\/>Where is it?<\/p>\n<p id=\"e6d7e4ca-e441-4d37-9bd3-2912cf74a3de\">The spiral galaxy NGC 6951 is located 70 million <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/light-year.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/light-year.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">light-years<\/a> from Earth, in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15486-night-sky-constellations-names.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15486-night-sky-constellations-names.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">constellation<\/a> Cepheus.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-4ea5f98e-f0cf-42ba-97b1-a0d90d63dd91\"\/>Why is it amazing?<\/p>\n<p id=\"aff6cc88-2fa9-4bca-9789-710d15528be3\">Crossing the core of NGC 6951 is a bar of stars, a common feature in elongated <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22382-spiral-galaxy.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22382-spiral-galaxy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spiral galaxies<\/a> that acts as a kind of galactic conveyor belt, channeling gas inward toward the nucleus. That flow of gas gives rise to one of the galaxy&#8217;s most captivating features: a circumnuclear starburst ring about <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2025\/10\/Starbursting_centre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">3,800 light years<\/a> wide that encircles the galactic heart.<\/p>\n<p>Within this ring, the conditions are just right for an intense burst of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/james-webb-space-telescope\/sparkling-galaxy-blazes-with-star-formation-in-new-james-webb-space-telescope-image\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/james-webb-space-telescope\/sparkling-galaxy-blazes-with-star-formation-in-new-james-webb-space-telescope-image\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">star formation<\/a>. The bar funnels cold gas to the central region, where it collects and compresses, triggering the birth of new stars at a significant rate.
