But these warehouse-like facilities, containing computers that process and store data, require a lot of land and huge amounts of energy, generating significant carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rr00033b6ngpv7an36@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Data center power demand will increase 165% by 2030, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmansachs.com\/insights\/articles\/ai-to-drive-165-increase-in-data-center-power-demand-by-2030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Goldman Sachs<\/a>. Some data centers use renewables, and others are being constructed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitecase.com\/insight-our-thinking\/constructing-low-carbon-economy-data-centers-demands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">renewable energy generation on-site<\/a>, but clean energy sources like solar and wind farms require physical space, as does data center infrastructure.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rr00043b6nle0j185h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now, some are looking to put data centers into space, bypassing the problem of finding available land. Space also offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/12\/27\/climate\/space-solar-farms-climate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">better access to solar energy<\/a>, without the cloud cover, the darkness of nighttime or the seasonality of Earth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rr00053b6n7qpr7j8k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In Europe, the ASCEND project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of space-based data centers for reducing CO2 emissions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rr00063b6n3a18ux1c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last year, France-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thalesaleniaspace.com\/en\/press-releases\/thales-alenia-space-reveals-results-ascend-feasibility-study-space-data-centers-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Thales Alenia Space<\/a>, which led a European Commission-funded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thalesaleniaspace.com\/en\/press-releases\/thales-alenia-space-reveals-results-ascend-feasibility-study-space-data-centers-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> into the feasibility of ASCEND, found that sending data centers to space to take advantage of continuous solar energy could offer \u201ca more eco-friendly and sovereign solution for hosting and processing data.\u201d But that would be contingent on technological advancements in several areas, said Xavier Roser of Thales Alenia Space.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rr00073b6nlmk9s72e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the total emissions from rocket launches are currently only a fraction of those from the aviation industry, rockets release pollutants at higher altitudes, where they last longer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rr00083b6nrywwbfpi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The ASCEND study estimated that for space data centers to effectively reduce carbon emissions compared to their terrestrial counterparts would require the development of a launcher that emits 10 times less carbon over its lifecycle than current ones. It\u2019s not clear when or if such a rocket may be in development. SpaceX, which has revolutionized the cost of rockets with its fleet of Falcon launch vehicles, has not revealed any plans to debut a more environmentally friendly rocket design.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-ascend-1.jpg\" alt=\"A rendering from Thales Alenia Space of how a space data center could one day look.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1115\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rr000a3b6nqswy9cm5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Abu Dhabi-based startup <a href=\"https:\/\/madari.ae\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Madari Space<\/a> has collaborated with an industrial accelerator program run by Thales Alenia Space, and is one of a handful of companies that are launching small computing components into orbit as technical demonstrations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rr000b3b6nt378egkf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Madari founder and CEO Shareef Al Romaithi, who is also a pilot for Etihad Airways, said space-based data centers could benefit a variety of customers, including those with Earth observation satellites. He said storing and processing their raw observation data in space can reduce lag time in anlayzing their findings, and \u201callow them to make informed decisions in a timely manner,\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe0p1r000y3b6n9e984370@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He hopes to eventually deploy a constellation of data satellites into orbit. While that goal is a way off, Madari\u2019s first mission, scheduled for 2026, will send a payload about the size of a toaster oven \u2014 consisting of data storage and data processing components \u2014 into orbit aboard an Emirati satellite, part of the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs\u202f(UNOOSA)\u2019s Access to Space for All Initiative.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rs000e3b6nee2giy76@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Others have already carried out launches. In May, China launched <a href=\"https:\/\/english.www.gov.cn\/news\/202505\/15\/content_WS6825452ec6d0868f4e8f28e6.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">12 satellites<\/a> for a space-based computing constellation \u2014 the first of a proposed 2,800-satellite fleet to process data in space.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rs000f3b6n22aoybgs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Al Romaithi says that should be a wakeup call to consider space a viable location for data centers. \u201cIt is a reality that\u2019s happening,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rs000g3b6nkh814tno@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lonestar Data Holdings, a Florida-based firm, said in March that it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonestarlunar.com\/press-release\/lunar-data-center-achieves-first-success-en-route-to-the-moon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">successfully tested<\/a> a small data center on the moon, despite the system <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/07\/science\/intuitive-machines-athena-mission-concluded\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">landing on its side and powering down early<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rs000h3b6np2q3anef@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In November, Starcloud \u2014 a Washington state-based startup \u2014 will launch a satellite equipped with a Nvidia H100 graphics processing unit (GPU). The company told CNN via email that it will set a record for the most powerful in-orbit compute power.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rs000i3b6nddldk1qy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMy view is that in 10 years\u2019 time, almost all new data centers will be being built in space, purely because of the constraints we are facing\u202fon building new energy projects terrestrially,\u201d Philip Johnston, its CEO, said in the email. The main challenges to overcome first are dissipating large amounts of heat in a vacuum and making the chips work in a high radiation environment, he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rs000j3b6ndwx4jsue@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, it\u2019s very early days for the sector \u2014 and a giant leap to launch data centers big enough to offer an alternative to those on Earth. Cost will be key, with launch costs dependent on the weight of the payload.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rs000k3b6nw6nnwmh0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lonestar has signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/sidusspace.com\/2025\/04\/02\/sidus-space-signs-extended-and-amended-preliminary-120m-agreement-with-lonestar-for-lunar-data-storage-spacecraft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$120 million deal with spacecraft provider Sidus<\/a> to build and provide on-orbit support for six data-storage satellites. It plans to launch the first in 2027 \u2014 a 15-petabyte system operating from the Earth-moon Lagrange point L1, some 60,000 kilometers from the moon. The next five satellites will each double in storage capacity, while keeping the same weight and energy requirements, the company says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rs000l3b6ny1h9td0q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Each will share a ride with larger satellites aboard a SpaceX Falcon, making up around 15% of the payload mass. That could cost in the region of $10 million per launch, for a fraction of the storage of many terrestrial data centers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rs000n3b6nikb51cna@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But some experts are skeptical about the economics of data centers in space. \u201cTo do a cost effective, true, objective analysis of it, it doesn\u2019t really stand up to scrutiny,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scifac.hku.hk\/people\/parker-quentin-a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Quentin A. Parker<\/a>, the director of the Laboratory for Space Research at the University of Hong Kong (HKU).  \u201cThe terrestrial solutions are still there, and they\u2019re still probably a lot cheaper than trying to put anything into space,\u201d he added. \u201cPutting them into space has all sorts of problems associated with it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rs000o3b6nw2xwp9sl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While advocates claim that storing data in space could provide protection from data centers being attacked, or damaged due to natural disasters, Parker points out that space brings its own risks, including radiation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/12\/27\/science\/space-junk-earth-kessler-syndrome\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space debris<\/a>, and also the consequences of sending more human-made objects into space without a solution for cleaning them up.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgs20gwp00273b6nmxupamxa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Experts have been raising alarm bells about the increasing amount of human-made junk left in space; they warn that a collision could take down space-based technologies that power our everyday lives.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rs000p3b6nsshu7zp8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Others have pointed out that maintaining and repairing data centers in space could <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/data-centres-in-space-theyre-a-brilliant-idea-but-a-herculean-challenge-246635\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pose a major challenge<\/a>, while space weather, such as solar flares, could disrupt services. And a number of nations are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swfound.org\/publications-and-reports\/2025-global-counterspace-capabilities-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reportedly developing \u201ccounterspace technologies,\u201d<\/a> such as jamming systems that can be targeted at satellites.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rs000q3b6n57pvr9ym@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Proponents of space-based data centers may be \u201coverselling the advantages and significantly underselling the major drawbacks,\u201d said Parker.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgqe07rs000r3b6n0snejw38@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But for Al Romaithi, looking off-planet is a necessity. \u201cIt is worth overcoming these challenges because the alternative is technological stagnation,\u201d he said. \u201cWe will reach a point where we are exhausting our resources just to run data centers.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Advances in artificial intelligence are driving surging demand for data centers.
