{"id":215309,"date":"2025-10-21T11:09:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T11:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/215309\/"},"modified":"2025-10-21T11:09:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T11:09:09","slug":"the-best-nutritionists-understand-ketones-let-them-do-their-job-supplement-brands-hit-back-at-ucis-puzzling-intervention-on-ketones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/215309\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;The best nutritionists understand ketones, let them do their job&#8221;: Supplement brands hit back at UCI&#8217;s &#8220;puzzling&#8221; intervention on ketones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Supplement brands who provide ketone products to the world&#8217;s best cyclists have come out fighting after\u00a0the\u00a0UCI released a\u00a0statement recommending riders avoid ketones as there is &#8220;no compelling evidence&#8221; they boost performance or recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, the UCI\u00a0took the interesting step of releasing an official statement on ketone\u00a0use in cycling.\u00a0The governing body stated\u00a0that while the supplements will not be banned, the <a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/uci-tells-riders-avoid-ketones-316459\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recommendation was for teams and riders to avoid them<\/a>, the UCI taking the stance that there is no scientific evidence to support their use.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the claims, the CEO of\u00a0Visma-Lease\u00a0a Bike&#8217;s partner\u00a0Ketone-IQ said he &#8220;respectfully disagrees&#8221;, while the CEO of Astana-Qazaqstan\u00a0and Soudal Quick-Step&#8217;s supplier\u00a0KetoneAid called the UCI intervention &#8220;puzzling&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/frame3.png\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload\" itemprop=\"image\" width=\"970\" height=\"647\" alt=\"Sepp Kuss and Visma-Lease a Bike ketone product\" title=\"Sepp Kuss and Visma-Lease a Bike ketone product\"\/>Sepp Kuss and Visma-Lease a Bike ketone product (credit: Ketone-IQ)<\/p>\n<p>Ketones are a chemical compound produced naturally in the body,\u00a0used during exercise when glucose is in short supply. However, there are also ketone supplements which\u00a0have become a regular sight at the biggest races on the calendar, riders often seen quickly drinking a small bottle of liquid at the finish of Grand Tour stages.\u00a0Riders and supplement brands have spoken regularly about ketones boosting recovery, with numerous teams having official ketone partners or sponsors.<\/p>\n<p>Frank Llosa CEO KetoneAid, the brand which provides ketone supplements to WorldTour teams\u00a0Soudal Quick-Step and Astana Qazaqstan, questioned the need for the UCI to express an opinion on ketones\u00a0and asked if the governing body would now be taking a stance on a whole range of other nutrition and supplementation products.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What&#8217;s puzzling is why the\u00a0UCI\u00a0feels the need to issue recommendations about something it claims doesn&#8217;t work,&#8221; Llosa\u00a0told road.cc.\u00a0&#8220;If ketones are safe and ineffective, why not let riders make their own choices? Did they read it differently? Hard to say when they don&#8217;t tell us which study they&#8217;re referencing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/photo-2024-05-09-14-10-22.png\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload\" itemprop=\"image\" width=\"900\" height=\"900\" alt=\"Mark Cavendish using KetoneAid supplement\" title=\"Mark Cavendish using KetoneAid supplement\"\/>Mark Cavendish using KetoneAid supplement (credit: KetoneAid)<\/p>\n<p>He concluded by telling us that the &#8220;good news&#8221; is that the UCI&#8217;s &#8220;original concern on ketones was safety, and this statement doesn&#8217;t mention that at all&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So I guess we can assume the safety issue has been resolved,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The best performance nutritionists understand ketones, let them do their job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fellow ketone supplement brand Ketone-IQ also supplies WorldTour riders with its products, the company having a partnership with Visma-Lease a Bike.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/vismablogpost6section.png\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload\" itemprop=\"image\" width=\"970\" height=\"647\" alt=\"Visma-Lease a Bike ketone partner\" title=\"Visma-Lease a Bike ketone partner\"\/>Visma-Lease a Bike ketone partner (credit: Ketone IQ)<\/p>\n<p>Michael Brandt, Ketone-IQ&#8217;s CEO and co-founder said he &#8220;respectfully disagrees&#8221; with the UCI&#8217;s judgement that the supplements do not boost performance or recovery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have robust data from our partnership with Visma-Lease a Bike that Ketone-IQ helps with a number of relevant biomarkers, similar to the training benefits of altitude training,&#8221; he told us.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our stance continues to be that measures \u2014 nutrition or otherwise \u2014 that improve rider performance with little or no downside should be unequivocally allowed. I put altitude training, innovation on carbohydrate formulation, and ketones all together among other measures in this category. Healthier, stronger riders are safer riders, which\u00a0is a win for the entire sport.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brandt&#8217;s company has done some <a href=\"https:\/\/ketone.com\/blogs\/blog\/team-visma-lease-a-bike-study-ketone-epo-recovery-performance?srsltid=AfmBOor703AqfSQnn2ZlFIgLQ1AxH_v0QNtgOM4taIXg0187p4fdya3Q\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research<\/a> of its own, a study in collaboration with the human performance research institute at KU Leuven\u00a0suggesting\u00a0Ketone-IQ&#8217;s product delivered measurable improvements in\u00a0EPO, angiogenesis and vascular function.<\/p>\n<p>This, they say, would mean\u00a0more red blood cells to carry oxygen, new red blood vessel formation, and\u00a0faster blood transport through existing blood vessels. The data from the study is under review, Brandt hoping it will be fully published soon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/uci-tells-riders-avoid-ketones-316459\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&gt;\u00a0UCI tells riders to avoid ketones as &#8220;no compelling evidence&#8221; they enhance performance or recovery<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some have expressed surprise with the tone of the UCI&#8217;s statement, the governing body issuing a press release about a product which is legal and does not, as far as anyone is aware, have any safety implications.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The UCI said research has &#8220;contradicted earlier findings&#8221; that ketones &#8220;were found to have added value in terms of the speed of muscle glycogen resynthesis and endogenous EPO production&#8221;, a claim repeated in Ketone-IQ&#8217;s recent research.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The results of a very comprehensive, high-quality study show that taking ketones after competition or high-intensity training sessions has no effect on the quality of recovery,&#8221; the UCI statement concluded.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As there is no compelling evidence that ketone supplements enhance performance or recovery, the UCI sees no reason for them to be used.
