We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/mediterranean-diet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mediterranean diet<\/a> &#8211; long known to fight off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/cardiovascular-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cardiovascular disease<\/a>, diabetes, and some types of cancer &#8211; can also protect your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/tooth-decay-heart-disease-link-b2743855.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> gum health<\/a> and ward off inflammation, scientists have found.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A new study, published in the Journal of Periodontology, revealed that the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in fruit, vegetables, legumes, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/olive-oil\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">olive oil<\/a>, can slash your risk of gum disease and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/inflammation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflammation<\/a> by up to 65 per cent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It also found that a diet heavy in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/red-meat\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> red meat<\/a> can put you at a higher risk of developing severe gum disease or systemic inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Luigi Nibali, the study\u2019s lead author, said: \u201cOur research shows the potential effect that a nutrient-dense, plant-rich diet could play in improving the nation\u2019s gum health.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is emerging evidence about the role that a balanced diet might have in maintaining a periodontal healthy status.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/GettyImages-56910233.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Oily fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids which prevents inflammation\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Oily fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids which prevents inflammation (Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from King\u2019s College London assessed 200 patients enrolled in an oral and dental biobank, performing dental exams, blood tests, and diet questionnaires.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Patients who did not closely follow the Mediterranean diet tended to have more severe gum disease, especially if they frequently consumed red meat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The study found that higher levels of a key inflammatory markers were linked to worse gum health, while diets that were heavy in plant-based foods were linked to lower levels of inflammatory markers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Mediterranean diet consists of healthy fats, like olive oil, that contain compounds including oleic acid, which reduce inflammation markers. Other fats including fish, nuts and seeds, which have high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, also help deter inflammation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Naples Fruit Market.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Fruit and vegetables are protective against inflammation and gum disease\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Fruit and vegetables are protective against inflammation and gum disease (Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Wholegrains are also a key part of a Mediterranean-style diet, and foods like brown rice, oats, and wholemeal bread contain compounds that fight off inflammation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vegetables, which have a high content of vitamins and minerals, were also effective. Leafy greens can help produce more saliva and improve its ability to neutralise acids and ward off gum disease.
