He was originally planning to photograph the comet on its own when the auroras suddenly erupted, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spaceweather.com\/archive.php?view=1&amp;day=20&amp;month=10&amp;year=2025\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.spaceweather.com\/archive.php?view=1&amp;day=20&amp;month=10&amp;year=2025\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Spaceweather.com<\/a>, which first shared the photos.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"78adf57b-4e97-4f95-8a97-96df08e33510-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/northern-lights\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/northern-lights\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">auroras<\/a> were the result of a surprise geomagnetic storm, or disturbance to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/earths-magnetic-field\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/earths-magnetic-field\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s magnetic field<\/a>, triggered by a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/what-are-coronal-mass-ejections\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/what-are-coronal-mass-ejections\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coronal mass ejection<\/a> (CME) from the sun. This solar storm was originally <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/auroras\/aurora-alert-4-coronal-mass-ejections-are-racing-toward-earth-and-could-spark-impressive-northern-lights-this-week\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/auroras\/aurora-alert-4-coronal-mass-ejections-are-racing-toward-earth-and-could-spark-impressive-northern-lights-this-week\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">predicted to hit our planet two days earlier<\/a> but was delayed, reducing hopes of any resulting auroral displays. The disturbance eventually reached G2 (moderate) status, meaning auroras were potentially visible in up to 15 U.S. states, Live Science&#8217;s sister site <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"http:\/\/space.com\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"http:\/\/space.com\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Space.com reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"023aa93a-0d9b-411c-99c6-319cfe6e0003\">A wide range of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/aurora-colors-explained\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/aurora-colors-explained\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">aurora colors<\/a> were visible within the auroral arc, including more typical colors, such as greens and reds, as well as rarer hues, like <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/impossible-orange-auroras-spotted-in-uk-after-solar-storm-slams-into-earth\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/impossible-orange-auroras-spotted-in-uk-after-solar-storm-slams-into-earth\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">oranges<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/pink-auroras-solar-storm\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/pink-auroras-solar-storm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pinks<\/a>, which only appear under specific conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The bright comet was more than 230 times farther away from Earth than the moon when the image was taken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PnmG3oxXk8Y7eCbRFC5kPQ.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of vibrant multicolor auroras streaking across the night sky\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PnmG3oxXk8Y7eCbRFC5kPQ.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PnmG3oxXk8Y7eCbRFC5kPQ.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>The auroras over Scotland included an unexpectedly wide range of different colors. (Image credit: Alan Tough)<\/p>\n<p id=\"e23db499-2002-403d-943d-efe185ceb8b3\">Comet Lemmon was discovered on Jan. 3, by researchers at the Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter observatory in Arizona&#8217;s Santa Catalina Mountains. It is a nonperiodic comet that likely orbits the sun every 1,350 years.<\/p>\n<p>Comet Lemmon will make its closest approach to Earth today (Oct. 21), when it will come within 56 million miles (90 million kilometers) of our planet, before reaching its closest point to the sun, or perihelion, on Nov. 8.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>Lemmon has become much brighter in recent weeks as its increased proximity to the sun has caused the cloud of gas, ice and dust surrounding it \u2014 known as its coma \u2014 to expand. It currently has an apparent magnitude of 4, meaning it is clearly visible to the naked eye.<\/p>\n<p id=\"11e63a7b-adf4-42fd-968c-d2c7b0e28976\">The comet has also grown a sizable tail, which has been <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/superbright-comet-lemmon-gets-its-tail-temporarily-torn-to-pieces-by-solar-wind\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/superbright-comet-lemmon-gets-its-tail-temporarily-torn-to-pieces-by-solar-wind\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">frequently battered by solar wind<\/a> as Lemmon swerves through the inner <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-system\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-system\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>People in the Northern Hemisphere can see the comet in the northwestern sky, located just below the Big Dipper, shortly after sunset. While visible to the naked eye, the best views will be achieved with a decent <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/best-telescopes\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/best-telescopes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">backyard telescope<\/a> or a pair of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/best-binoculars\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/best-binoculars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stargazing binoculars<\/a>.
