{"id":217657,"date":"2025-10-22T10:45:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T10:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/217657\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T10:45:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T10:45:07","slug":"escape-to-the-country-follows-paralympic-cyclist-in-cumbria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/217657\/","title":{"rendered":"Escape To The Country follows Paralympic cyclist in Cumbria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  The episode followed presenter Jules Hudson as he helped Steve Bate MBE and wife Caroline find a countryside home.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Steve has been competing for Great Britain for over a decade, winning more than a dozen Paralympic and World Championship medals.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The decorated cyclist revealed that he would be retiring in six months and returning to his roots as a carpenter so he was on the lookout for a workshop where he would be able to make furniture.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Originally from New Zealand, Steve moved from rock climbing to two wheels after a diagnosis of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) in 2011 meant he was no longer able to climb.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  His wife Caroline is passionate about spending time outdoors and wild swimming.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Ideally, the couple set their sights on a detached character property with two bedrooms, a small garage, storage space and a workshop, close to a village.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  They had a budget of \u00a3425,000.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The first home they viewed was in Levens, near Kendal, where they found a detached dormer bungalow.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>(Image: BBC iPlayer)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Built in 1947, the property comprised a living room, dining room, modern kitchen, two en-suite double bedrooms and offered a corner plot with a garage.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  As of April 2025, the house was on the market for \u00a3415,000.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The trio visited Windermere, paying a visit to The Little Ice Cream Shop for a sweet treat before popping into The Northern Line and speaking to the owners.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  For the second property, they travelled to Wigton and looked at an original sandstone barn dating to the 1800s.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>(Image: BBC iPlayer)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The building was converted to a home in the early 2000s and featured a lounge with patio doors to a south-facing garden, large kitchen diner leading to a terrace and detached garage, three bedrooms, and a family bathroom.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  This was on the market for \u00a3345,000.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The programme also highlighted three properties of interest in the area;
