It is also only the second known space object that orbits entirely inside of Venus&#8217; orbit, occasionally even crossing the orbit of Mercury.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"15b7b314-dde7-4779-a457-d6bf6982972a-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/carnegiescience.edu\/bio\/dr-scott-s-sheppard\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/carnegiescience.edu\/bio\/dr-scott-s-sheppard\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Scott Sheppard<\/a>, an astronomer at the Carnegie Science research institute in Washington, D.C., first spotted 2025 SC79 on Sep. 27. The asteroid was obscured by the sun&#8217;s glare, making it exceptionally difficult to observe, according to a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/carnegiescience.edu\/news\/fast-moving-asteroid-found-suns-glare\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/carnegiescience.edu\/news\/fast-moving-asteroid-found-suns-glare\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a> released by Carnegie Science. Spotting hidden asteroids like 2025 SC79 is important to ensure that no potentially hazardous space rock sneaks up on our planet without us noticing.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"5623ff1c-97e9-4f10-a3b4-72d2f032d534\">&#8220;The most dangerous asteroids are the most difficult to detect,&#8221; Sheppard said in the statement. &#8220;Most asteroid research finds these objects in the dark of night, where they are easiest to spot. But asteroids that lurk near the Sun can only be observed during twilight \u2014 when the Sun is just about to rise or set. If these &#8216;twilight&#8217; asteroids approach Earth, they could pose serious impact hazards.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Asteroids like 2025 SC79 are definitely worth keeping an eye on. To put its 2,300-foot diameter in context, the so-called <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/asteroids\/just-the-tip-of-the-iceberg-why-risky-asteroids-like-2024-yr4-will-pester-earth-for-decades-to-come\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/asteroids\/just-the-tip-of-the-iceberg-why-risky-asteroids-like-2024-yr4-will-pester-earth-for-decades-to-come\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;city-killer&#8221; asteroid 2024 YR4<\/a> discovered earlier this year is only around 180 feet (55 meters) wide, and that has the potential to release 500 times more energy than the atomic bomb that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/45509-hiroshima-nagasaki-atomic-bomb.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/45509-hiroshima-nagasaki-atomic-bomb.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">destroyed Hiroshima<\/a> if it were to hit Earth (don&#8217;t worry, it almost certainly won&#8217;t).<\/p>\n<p>Sheppard discovered 2025 SC79 using the Dark Energy Camera on the National Science Foundation&#8217;s (NSF) Blanco 4-meter telescope. The asteroid&#8217;s existence was then confirmed with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/minorplanetcenter.net\/db_search\/show_object?utf8=%E2%9C%93&amp;object_id=2025+SC79\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/minorplanetcenter.net\/db_search\/show_object?utf8=%E2%9C%93&amp;object_id=2025+SC79\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">observations<\/a> from the NSF&#8217;s Gemini telescope and Carnegie Science&#8217;s Magellan telescopes, according to the statement.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second super speedy asteroid spotted by Sheppard and his colleagues in recent years, having also <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/solar-system-fastest-orbiting-asteroid-2021-ph27.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/solar-system-fastest-orbiting-asteroid-2021-ph27.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">discovered the fastest known asteroid<\/a> in 2021. That object, named 2021 PH27, orbits the sun in 113 days, making it just 15 days quicker than 2025 SC79. The only object in the solar system with a faster orbital period is the planet <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/mercury-planet\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/mercury-planet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mercury<\/a>, which completes an orbit of the sun in 88 days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p id=\"217509dd-4b24-420b-86cb-adacfc3d95aa\">2025 SC79&#8217;s orbit has now taken it behind the sun, so it won&#8217;t be visible for several months.
