Veterans and their loved ones can dial 988 then Press 1 or text 838255 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg04e6005026p2cgvccfqb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An edge comes to Michael\u2019s voice when he speaks about his time serving in Afghanistan and his struggles living with post-traumatic stress disorder.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm00093b6ndhthc3x1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A hardened Marine veteran, Michael \u2014 who asked to use the pseudonym to speak candidly about sensitive health issues \u2014 describes in tones that are measured but laced with irritation what he saw in conflict: vehicles being blown up, children being exploited, cellphones that could trigger unexpected detonations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm000a3b6nxsksq2nx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Though he left the armed forces years ago, he still has flashbacks. To this day, he is \u201ctrying to figure out how to stop the nightmares,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm000b3b6n0mnc5gg8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It took him years to find a trusted VA therapist, who gave him a lifeline after he struggled with addiction and was hospitalized following multiple suicide attempts, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm000c3b6ne23ytkty@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But recently, Michael\u2019s one-on-one sessions with the provider were suddenly terminated.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm000d3b6na052h1z4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some Veterans Affairs hospitals, including the one where Michael gets his care, have stepped up enforcement of a policy in recent years that limits the number of long-term therapy sessions available to individuals, according to half a dozen mental health providers and VA patients     at locations across the country who spoke to CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm000e3b6neuqqxctt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Under the policy, put in place under earlier administrations, patients initially get a certain number of one-on-one therapy sessions, which can vary between four and 24 sessions, depending on the type of treatment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm000f3b6nrgxd5dwy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mental health care providers at four facilities have told CNN that, whereas in the past they had discretion to extend the number of sessions based on their assessments of their patients, the VA is now pressing them to stop one-on-one sessions at the end of the allotted series, and more broadly reduce the number of patients who get this long-term care \u2014 without consideration for whether this is clinically appropriate. The providers asked not to be named for fear of retribution.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm000g3b6nyoawzpl7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In some cases, providers told CNN that if they pushed back on the policy, they faced disciplinary consequences, which could result in their privileges to practice therapy at VA facilities being removed. CNN has viewed some of these documents discussing disciplinary measures. Some providers said they had to justify extending care to more sessions in writing \u2014 a change from previous practice at their VA facility.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm000h3b6njlrsb4e2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Contacted by CNN, the VA denied veterans aren\u2019t getting the care they need.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzgadk1001p3b6n6zbpw7ep@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A spokesperson for the department said it was not aware of providers facing disciplinary reviews for challenging a policy to limit sessions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm000i3b6ncrnkhk1u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere are no limits on the number of VA appointments a Veteran can have in mental health or any other areas,\u201d Peter Kasperowicz, the spokesperson, said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm000j3b6nja6wha4o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The VA \u201cworks with Veterans over an initial eight to 15 mental health sessions and collaboratively plans any needed follow-on care,\u201d he said. \u201cAs part of this process, Veterans and their health care team decide together how to address ongoing needs, including whether to step down to other types of care and self-maintenance, or continue with VA therapy.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm000k3b6njd5db5ms@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe goal is recovery, healing and helping Veterans achieve greater independence and resilience.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm000m3b6ndd57q0t9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While some providers who spoke to CNN said they are given some flexibility to extend care, all said there has been a draconian effort to move patients out of individual therapy more quickly since President Donald Trump took office in January and installed Doug Collins as VA secretary.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gettyimages-2213765761.jpg\" alt=\"Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins testifies before the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee in the Dirksen Senate Office Building on May 6, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2350\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm000n3b6nbgs5y4nk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s really, really frustrating. These people need help,\u201d one provider said. The person stressed that some mental health conditions are \u201cchronic,\u201d and those patients would need treatment for life.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm000o3b6njivg4v9w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another provider described having to inform one of their patients that sessions would be ending, saying: \u201cIt was terrible. The timing wasn\u2019t right. There were still things we were working on.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm000p3b6nz1smq4dm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt felt like it was a moral failing on my part, even though it wasn\u2019t my fault,\u201d the provider said. \u201cIt\u2019s re-traumatizing for the veteran. It almost feels like I\u2019m a perpetrator of that, having to carry out those orders.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm000q3b6nw2c9iei0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Michael, the combat veteran, said that finding out his therapy sessions were to stop felt \u201clike being abandoned \u2014 you\u2019re thrown away like yesterday\u2019s trash.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg9fdm000r3b6nc6hyjhgm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019m not ready to address all my issues on my own yet,\u201d he said. \u201cIt feels like they took the training wheels off before I\u2019m ready.\u201d He has re-applied for one-on-one care and is in the middle of a monthslong waiting period.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzg3mv500003b6n4dsa2d1g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some providers said they were told the rationale for the renewed push to limit therapy sessions is to free up room for more veterans to enter the VA system and receive mental health treatment, and to move patients through the system more rapidly.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz000z3b6ncf22b6w5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/istss.org\/student-perspectives-recent-advances-in-short-term-evidence-based-ptsd-treatments-sophie-oliver-ma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Some<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/news\/science-updates\/2018\/a-shorter-but-effective-treatment-for-ptsd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">studies<\/a> do suggest that shorter-term, limited sessions can work well for particular veterans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz00103b6n3afdlnlw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And the practice of limiting longer-term mental health care for some patients is also commonplace in the private sector. \u201cLarger hospitals and health care systems do sometimes place limits,\u201d said Caitlin Thompson, a former VA psychologist who oversaw the Veterans Crisis Line  and suicide prevention program and now works in the private sector. \u201cIt depends on what\u2019s clinically appropriate,\u201d she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz00113b6n41iv5pbv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One former VA mental health care provider, who is now in the private sector and didn\u2019t want to give their name, said: \u201cWhen insurance is paying for mental health care, utilization review is standard practice. It\u2019s not open-ended. There are weigh stations.\u201d It is often important to set goals and timeframes in treatment to track progress, they added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz00123b6neubofcsn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, VA providers who spoke to CNN said there were problems with how the limits were being implemented at their VA facilities.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz00133b6nr2vxhr6h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One provider said that while they agreed with the objective to bring more veterans into the system to access care, \u201cit should be agreed upon between the patient and the therapist\u201d regarding when treatment should end \u2014 and not be imposed by the institution.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz00143b6ntc21twc7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another mental health care provider at a VA facility in the western US said that because of the intensified push to limit sessions, \u201cwe have been hemorrhaging staff  \u201d as some mental health providers quit in frustration over the policy \u2014 at a time when the VA already has a severe shortage of psychologists, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oversight.gov\/reports\/oig-determination-veterans-health-administrations-severe-occupational-staffing-shortages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to a recent VA Inspector General report<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/2025-06-06t182401z-1073907857-rc26xea9aje1-rtrmadp-3-usa-trump-veterans.jpg\" alt=\"Veterans, family members and activists demonstrate during a protest against the Trump administration's cuts to the Department of Veterans Affairs, in Washington, DC, on June 6, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz00153b6nmf39a8l9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Stephen Long, a former VA psychologist at the Northport VA Medical Center on Long Island, told CNN that he retired in 2024, in part because he was told to limit one-on-one sessions with patients.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz00163b6nfbdyy84h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Longer-term, more open-ended therapy builds more trust between veterans and their therapists, he said. \u201cIf you can\u2019t have this kind of therapy, you\u2019ll miss opportunities to develop that trust.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz00173b6nyvkfdgb9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some veterans will need therapy for the rest of their lives, Long said. Treatment needs for physical illnesses would never simply be cut off \u2014 \u201cIf you need insulin for your diabetes, you don\u2019t stop it,\u201d he said \u2014 and mental illnesses should be treated the same. Some providers who spoke to CNN also said veterans often have issues that lend themselves to needing longer-term care.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz00183b6ntu7n8fpx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mark Jorges, a former psychotherapist and mental health counselor at the VA hospital in Temple, Texas, says he resigned this May in part because of his frustrations over the mandate to limit sessions.  \u201cI brought it up all the time\u201d to leadership at his hospital, Jorges told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz00193b6noc47ou6z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He says from the time he started working at that VA facility in 2021, there have been various attempts to have therapists limit sessions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz001a3b6numcs8aa3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But setting a set number of sessions \u201cas a directive is not appropriate clinically, because veterans have different pathologies according to what they\u2019ve been through,\u201d Jorges said. \u201cYou could be talking about someone with PTSD, depression, anxiety, acute stress disorder \u2026 that\u2019s the majority of patients I saw. You can\u2019t put a cap on it. It\u2019s just not appropriate.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz001b3b6ns9c9j9y0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The American Psychological Association, the largest scientific and professional organization for psychologists in the US, told CNN it is aware of reports from VA psychologists of mental health visits being limited for some veterans, and is looking into them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz001c3b6niei0g508@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cVeterans deserve individualized, recovery-oriented care based in shared decision-making between the provider and the Veteran,\u201d Katherine McGuire, the APA\u2019s chief advocacy officer, said in a statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz001d3b6n4u7fd8uj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe VA has a great history of providing excellent mental health care by exceptionally skilled providers apt at assessing veterans\u2019 needs and appropriate treatment options.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz001e3b6n5ks576yu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Patients were offered other options for treatment, such as group therapy or the chance to re-apply for one-on-one treatment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz001f3b6n8gqua8hz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But some veterans who have come to depend on their trusted therapists say those are not palatable options.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz001g3b6nmr5m1h8d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Michael said he was offered group therapy, but does not want to take it as he feels uncomfortable speaking about his issues in a group setting. And that requires continuous maintenance,\u201d he said. \u201cOnce that crisis happens, so \u2014 we have to wait \u2018till veterans threaten to kill themselves before they get care?\u201d he asked. \u201cI\u2019m scared to death. I\u2019m scared to death for my veterans.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgzga7gz001m3b6nlls9edh4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe just want the care that we were promised,\u201d the Afghanistan combat veteran said.
