{"id":218863,"date":"2025-10-22T22:21:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T22:21:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/218863\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T22:21:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T22:21:08","slug":"china-found-something-fascinating-on-the-far-side-of-the-moon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/218863\/","title":{"rendered":"China Found Something Fascinating on the Far Side of the Moon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"pw-incontent-excluded article-paragraph skip\">China\u2019s Chang\u2019e-6 mission, the first sample return mission to the far side of the Moon last year, made a fascinating discovery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">While poring over the returned lunar samples, which arrived on Earth in June of last year, scientists found fragments of carbonaceous chondrite (CI chondrite), which once belonged to a water-bearing meteorite that only rarely survives the journey through the Earth\u2019s atmosphere, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/china-brought-something-unexpected-back-from-the-far-side-of-the-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ScienceAlert reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">It\u2019s the first time we\u2019ve ever observed CI chondrite on the Moon, suggesting that volatile-rich asteroids \u2014 which are very porous, with hydrated minerals making up to 20 percent of their mass \u2014 can make it all the way to the lunar surface.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Thanks to their porous nature, they can easily break up if they smash into another object or a planet\u2019s atmosphere. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cas.cn\/newsroom\/cas_media\/202510\/t20251021_1089914.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">press release<\/a> about the discovery by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, less than one percent of meteorites on Earth are CI chondrites.
