Keegan Bradley<\/a> has admitted he doesn\u2019t expect to ever get over leading Team USA<\/a> to a shock Ryder Cup<\/a> defeat on home soil last month<\/a>, saying the event has always been \u201cbrutal\u201d to him.<\/p>\n

The 39-year-old was the youngest captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963 but he oversaw a disastrous campaign<\/a> that ended with Team Europe<\/a> winning 15-13 at Bethpage Black<\/a> \u2013 the first away victory for either team since 2012.<\/a><\/p>\n

Europe raced into a 5\u00bd-2\u00bd lead on the opening day and extended that to 11\u00bd-4\u00bd by the end of day two<\/a> \u2013 the biggest lead going into the final day in modern Ryder Cup history.<\/p>\n

The US fought back in the singles on Sunday, and looked like they may snatch victory at one point, but had ultimately left themselves too much to do<\/a> as Bradley was forced to accept he made some wrong decisions around pairings and course set-up.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince Bethpage, this has been one of the toughest times in my life,\u201d said Bradley at the media day for the Travelers Championship, where he is the defending champion. <\/p>\n

“You win, it\u2019s glory for a lifetime \u2013 but I didn\u2019t and I\u2019m going to have to sit with this for the rest of my life. There\u2019s no part of me that thinks I\u2019ll ever get over this. This event has been so brutal to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The US won 8\u00bd points from the 12 singles matches on Sunday but the hole they had dug themselves was too great and Bradley acknowledges he was shell-shocked after a disastrous opening two days.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou put so much into it, and you have all this planning, and the first two days went as poorly as we could have ever thought,\u201d he added. \u201cIt was pretty emotional. It was sad, to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was controversy ahead of the Ryder Cup around Bradley\u2019s decision not to select himself<\/a> to play as a wildcard, after he only narrowly missed out on automatic qualification.<\/p>\n

He has made no secret of his desperation to play in another Ryder Cup after suffering defeat on his appearances in 2012 and 2014, before not being selected by Zach Johnson in 2023 despite being in great form.<\/p>\n

He still retains that playing goal and wavered on his decision not to pick himself at points during the week at Bethpage before accepting it was the right call.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really would enjoy playing in one more. I don\u2019t know if I\u2019ll get the chance,\u201d added Bradley, who will now try to qualify for the next Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in Ireland in September 2027. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis effing event has been so brutal to me. I don\u2019t know if I want to play… No, I do. It\u2019s such a weird thing to love something so much that just doesn\u2019t give you anything.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll forever wonder and wish that I had a chance to play there [at Bethpage]. The first practice day, I was out on the tee, and I was watching the guys walk down the fairway all together, and I said: \u2018I wish I was playing. That\u2019s what it\u2019s all about. I\u2019m missing out.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cBy the second or third day I was like \u2018It\u2019s a good thing I\u2019m not playing,\u2019 because I was so physically exhausted… Good thing I didn\u2019t do it, because it would have been bad. I just didn\u2019t think I could do both jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the frustrating result, Bradley admitted he was humbled by the experience of being Ryder Cup captain in the year before the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t expect the support from the fans,\u201d explained Bradley. \u201cIn the history of the game \u2013 back to Bobby Jones, Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus \u2013 I don\u2019t know if any of them got to experience what I experienced this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got to experience something in the game of golf that I don\u2019t think anyone\u2019s ever experienced: where I\u2019m the Ryder Cup captain but also competing at a very high level, and winning tournaments, and contending in tournaments.
