{"id":220187,"date":"2025-10-23T11:51:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T11:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/220187\/"},"modified":"2025-10-23T11:51:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T11:51:08","slug":"reforms-only-black-branch-chair-quits-over-harmful-migration-debate-reform-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/220187\/","title":{"rendered":"Reform\u2019s only Black branch chair quits over \u2018harmful\u2019 migration debate | Reform UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The only Black branch chair of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/brexit-party\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reform UK<\/a> has left the rightwing populist party, saying the tone of Britain\u2019s migration debate is \u201cdoing more harm than good\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Neville Watson, from north London, told the Guardian he had not experienced any racism in Reform, where there were \u201ca lot of good people\u201d. However, the former leader of the party\u2019s Enfield branch said he was alarmed by the growing influence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2025\/sep\/17\/the-guardian-view-on-christianity-and-the-uk-far-right-churches-must-stand-up-to-the-false-prophets-of-division\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christian nationalism<\/a> \u2013 the hard-right movement that blends politics with fundamentalism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Watson added that he was dismayed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2025\/oct\/09\/muslim-charity-worried-hate-crimes-rise\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rising levels of Islamophobia<\/a>, feared some people within the party were \u201csympathetic\u201d to the far-right activist Tommy Robinson, and was concerned<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2025\/oct\/22\/deporting-legally-settled-people-broadly-in-line-conservative-policy-kemi-badenoch\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> British politics was \u201closing its compassion\u201d<\/a> as parties vied to compete with Reform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The son of Jamaican, Windrush-generation parents, Watson,whose professional background is in social enterprise, youth work and special educational needs, played a key role in welcoming voters from London\u2019s diverse communities into the party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Under his stewardship, branch meetings in Enfield attracted new members from Nigerian, Sikh and Turkish backgrounds who were disillusioned with mainstream politics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A fixture at conferences, the father-of-three had a coveted seat on Nigel Farage\u2019s table at events and wrote articles for the party\u2019s magazine, the New Reformer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, after the \u201cunite the kingdom\u201d rally, which attracted an estimated 110,000 protesters to London and raised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/sep\/21\/readers-polarised-unite-the-kingdom-rally\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fears of a new era of division in the UK<\/a>, Watson decided to leave Reform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Earlier this year he wrote to Zia Yusuf, Reform\u2019s former chair and current head of policy, saying the UK should pay reparations to African-Caribbeans, after Yusuf had dismissed the idea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Watson said: \u201cI know that down the track, there\u2019s going to be other issues that I\u2019m going to come into conflict [with Reform] on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe march in London recently, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/tommy-robinson\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tommy Robinson<\/a>, where the term Christian nationalism suddenly raised its head, where they were using Christian emblems to advance to me an ideology that is not Christian \u2026 I know that Nigel [Farage] himself has distanced himself from anything to do with the likes of Tommy Robinson, but I do know that there are still people within Reform who are quite sympathetic to his ideas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhether it\u2019s Nigel banging on about the [small] boats, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2025\/oct\/07\/incendiary-inaccurate-careless-handsworth-locals-reject-jenricks-race-claims\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Jenrick talking about Handsworth,<\/a> [politicians] are stoking a fire. Some might be stoking it with a smaller stick \u2013 and that type of conversation, with the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2025\/sep\/07\/military-sites-house-asylum-seekers-labour#:~:text=He%20said%20military%20planners%20were,numbers%20over%20the%20last%20year.%E2%80%9D\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> boats, the [asylum] hotels<\/a>, I feel it\u2019s doing more harm than good in terms of community relations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A longtime Brexit supporter and socially conservative evangelical Christian, Watson had stood as a parliamentary candidate in Edmonton, north London, and as a London Assembly candidate for Ukip before joining Reform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ultimately, he said, it was his religious beliefs and his views on the positive case for migration and diversity that led him to question the direction of UK politics.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"#EmailSignup-skip-link-13\" class=\"dcr-jzxpee\">skip past newsletter promotion<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1xjndtj\">Get the day\u2019s headlines and highlights emailed direct to you every morning<\/p>\n<p>Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain information about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. If I sat as a chair, I would always be conscious of that, I would never feel free, and so I have left Reform and joined the Christian People\u2019s Alliance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cReform has so much momentum at the moment, but leaving has allowed me to proclaim who I am without flinching. I don\u2019t want to see a society where we weaponise our faith against Islam.
