President Trump calls his Turnberry golf course \u201cmy Monet\u201d and makes calls at all hours of the day with ideas to improve it, his son has revealed.<\/p>\n

Eric Trump has told of his father\u2019s pride in the resort on the Ayrshire coast which he purchased for almost \u00a340 million in 2014.<\/p>\n

Trump said that while his rich friends were buying masterpiece paintings by the French artist he had bought Turnberry and described it as \u201cfar more beautiful\u201d.<\/p>\n

The US president, who also owns Trump International Links in Aberdeenshire<\/a>, obsesses about perfecting his Scottish properties, according to his son\u2019s new book.<\/p>\n

Eric, 41, is in charge of the golf resorts and oversaw a \u00a3200 million renovation of Turnberry after Trump\u2019s firm took it over.<\/p>\n

In his book Under Siege: My Family\u2019s Fight to Save Our Nation, he writes: \u201cDonald Trump could describe properties in the simplest yet most compelling terms.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was never interested in the poetic nonsense written by overprice PR firms. His messages were, and are, always simple and strong.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Turnberry is the greatest golf course on the planet. Nothing compares\u2019. It was an easy message to carry because it was true.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018I have friends who buy Monets,\u2019 he would say. \u2018Turnberry is my Monet and it\u2019s far more beautiful\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a company we\u2019ve built many projects from the ground up. Other times we purchased properties where previous owners didn\u2019t have vision or couldn\u2019t execute.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was the best at turning a diamond in the rough into the most iconic properties.<\/p>\n

\u201cTime after time, previous owners would come back to our renovated properties and say \u2018I just never saw the potential that you saw\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cOften, the difference was seeing what others couldn\u2019t; other times it was simply having pride of ownership and unwavering standards.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eric Trump said his father calls him \u201choney\u201d and still kisses him on the cheek when they see each other.<\/p>\n

He said the president<\/a> was fixated on minor details about his golf resorts and recounts one late-night phone call where he suggested making changes to the seventh hole on Turnberry\u2019s Ailsa course.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cMy father is the hardest-working person I\u2019ve ever known. He never stops. An Energizer bunny in a red tie.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019ll sometimes call me at five o\u2019clock in the morning: \u2018Hey, honey, are you awake?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cHe calls me at 11 o\u2019clock at night. \u2018Eric, I was thinking. The seventh hole at Turnberry, if we made that dogleg a little bit sharper, we could put a trap off to the left-hand side. You push that green back, we could pick up 30 yards and elevate the tee box. You\u2019d have a better tee shot.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cWe used to make ridiculous bets over the tiniest details of our properties. \u2018I\u2019ll bet you that window is exactly three feet from the corner\u2019. <\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Well, Dad, I\u2019m 3,000 miles away at the moment, but I\u2019ll bet you a dollar it\u2019s five feet\u2019. Out came the tape measure, ready to prove the other wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a stack of signed dollar bills pinned to the board above my desk for the bets I\u2019ve won.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe granularity of these conversations is something that no one would expect from Donald Trump. I definitely inherited his DNA.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this month it was revealed Turnberry made a loss of \u00a3631,000 last year despite record sales. Its turnover increased by 15 per cent in 2024 to a record high of \u00a324.2 million.<\/p>\n

The increase in revenue was driven by wealthy visiting golfers. A round can cost up to \u00a31,000.<\/a><\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s ambition is for The Open Championship to return to the venue, which also includes a five-star hotel.<\/p>\n

Turnberry has hosted The Open four times \u2014 including the famous \u201cDuel in the Sun\u201d between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus in 1977 \u2014 but not since 2009.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year the championship\u2019s organisers, the R&A, said \u201cbig logistical issues\u201d around local infrastructure had to be overcome before Turnberry could be awarded The Open again.<\/p>\n
