{"id":222314,"date":"2025-10-24T09:23:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T09:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/222314\/"},"modified":"2025-10-24T09:23:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T09:23:10","slug":"young-book-lovers-shine-at-joburgs-story-skirmish-and-battle-of-the-books-finals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/222314\/","title":{"rendered":"Young book lovers shine at Joburg\u2019s Story Skirmish and Battle of the Books finals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The City of Johannesburg&#8217;s Library and Information Services (LIS), under the Community Development Directorate, celebrated young readers&#8217; passion for books at the 2025 Story Skirmish and Battle of the Books Final and Prize-Giving ceremony, held over two days at Emmarentia Dam.<\/p>\n<p>The competitions brought together pupils aged 9 to 11 from primary schools across Johannesburg&#8217;s regions. Participants were selected and provided with books to read in preparation for the inter-school knockout rounds. Day one featured the Story Skirmish, while day two hosted the Battle of the Books, where finalists competed for top honours in a test of reading comprehension and teamwork.<\/p>\n<p>Prizes included certificates, trophies, and book vouchers sponsored by The Friends of the Johannesburg Public Libraries.<\/p>\n<p>Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development Cllr Tebogo Nkokou commended the finalists&#8217; dedication and talent. \u201cNot only did they make it to the top four out of 188 schools, but each team read seven books to prepare for the final knockout round. The hard work of these incredible young readers is truly commendable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>LIS Director Nobuntu Mpendulo praised both participants and supporters for their enthusiasm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone here is a winner. The fact that you made it to this stage shows commitment, teamwork, and a love for learning.
