The most exciting part? It&#8217;s smack-bang in its star&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/here-s-why-size-matters-in-habitability-of-planets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">habitable zone<\/a> \u2013 an orbital distance neither too far from nor too close to the star to support life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The exoplanet is in the habitable or the &#8216;Goldilocks Zone,&#8217; the right distance from its star that liquid water could exist on its surface, if it has the right atmosphere,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psu.edu\/news\/research\/story\/newly-discovered-super-earth-offers-prime-target-search-alien-life\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains astronomer Suvrath Mahadevan<\/a> of Pennsylvania State University.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/earth-could-be-even-more-habitable-wed-just-need-to-shift-jupiters-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth Could Be Even More Habitable. We&#8217;d Just Need to Shift Jupiter&#8217;s Orbit<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Scientists are still trying to figure out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/here-s-how-jupiter-s-gravity-could-help-us-find-alien-worlds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">complex mix of ingredients<\/a> that make up a world on which life can emerge, but there are a few key big-picture characteristics to look for before examining a candidate more closely.<\/p>\n<p>The first two things scientists look for are: whether the world has a solid, rocky composition like Earth, since it&#8217;s the only world we know for a fact hosts life; and whether the planet is at a distance from its star where temperatures allow for liquid water, the so-called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s11084-012-9301-6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solvent of life<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/theucipodcast\" title=\"University of California, Irvine\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #cccccc; text-decoration: none;\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">University of California, Irvine<\/a> \u00b7 <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/theucipodcast\/nearbyexoplanet_mixdown\" title=\"UC Irvine Podcast: Studying a Nearby Exoplanet\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #cccccc; text-decoration: none;\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">UC Irvine Podcast: Studying a Nearby Exoplanet<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Exoplanets that tick both these boxes are surprisingly rare in the catalog of <a href=\"https:\/\/exoplanetarchive.ipac.caltech.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thousands of worlds discovered to date<\/a>. Therefore, one that not only ticks those boxes but is also close enough for detailed study is a treasure among treasures.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What makes [GJ 251c] especially valuable is that its host star is close by, at just about 18 light-years away,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.uci.edu\/2025\/10\/23\/uc-irvine-astronomers-discover-nearby-exoplanet-in-habitable-zone\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says astronomer Paul Robertson<\/a> of the University of California, Irvine. &#8220;Cosmically speaking, it&#8217;s practically next door.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The exoplanet orbits a star called GJ 251, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/why-the-heck-aren-t-we-orbiting-a-red-dwarf-star\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">red dwarf<\/a> about a third of the mass and diameter of the Sun. Because it&#8217;s small and cool, the <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/exoplanets\/habitable-zone\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">habitable zone<\/a> is much closer to the star than the Solar System&#8217;s habitable zone. This can actually make any worlds hanging out there easier to find, because they have shorter orbits, making the signals from multiple orbits easier to spot and stack.<\/p>\n<p>A team of astronomers led by Corey Beard of UC Irvine targeted GJ 251 for observation in a search for low-mass nearby worlds that might be good candidates for direct imaging. This star was chosen because it was already known to host an exoplanet, <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/exoplanet-catalog\/gj-251-b\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GJ 251b<\/a>, a super-Earth 3.85 times Earth&#8217;s mass with a 14.2-day orbit that&#8217;s too close to the star for habitability. (<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Exoplanet_radial_velocity_doppler_spectroscopy_dark.gif\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alysa Obertas\/Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>To add to this existing data, the researchers took new, higher-resolution observations to study the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetary.org\/articles\/color-shifting-stars-the-radial-velocity-method\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tiny movements of the star<\/a> as it&#8217;s tugged about by the gravitational pull of any planets in orbit around it. To their intense delight, they found not just the signal of the known planet, but evidence of a second world, with an orbital period of 53.6 days \u2013 in the star&#8217;s habitable zone.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t know much about GJ 251c yet. The gravitational tugging it exerts on the star has yielded a measurement of its mass, but because it doesn&#8217;t <a href=\"https:\/\/lco.global\/spacebook\/exoplanets\/transit-method\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pass in front of its star<\/a>, it&#8217;s impossible to gauge its diameter and other properties without further information.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, it&#8217;s a prime candidate for further observations. The researchers believe that the exoplanet should be detectable in future direct imaging campaigns, where astronomers seek to investigate the world not by studying its effect on the star, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/stunning-direct-images-of-alien-worlds-are-detailed-enough-to-reveal-clouds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">directly observing the exoplanet itself<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is not easy to do, but we&#8217;re right on the cusp of new technologies that enable a new era in direct-imaging studies of alien worlds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are at the cutting edge of technology and analysis methods with this system,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.uci.edu\/2025\/10\/23\/uc-irvine-astronomers-discover-nearby-exoplanet-in-habitable-zone\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Beard says<\/a>. &#8220;While its discovery is quite  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/p-value\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73101\" data-postid=\"178937\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">statistically significant<\/a>, we are still determining the status of the planet due to the uncertainty of our instruments and methods.
