With artificial intelligence continuing to dominate the tech space, it can be easy to overlook other nascent areas, but there’s another tech transformation taking place that investors might want to pay attention to. <\/p>\n

Quantum computing stocks have been volatile over the last year, and largely overshadowed by companies more firmly rooted in the AI space. <\/p>\n

Yet, while the industry is small, some of the biggest names in tech have expanded into quantum computing recently, including Nvidia<\/a>, Google,<\/a> and IBM<\/a>. <\/p>\n

This type of highly advanced computing leverages the principles of quantum mechanics by utilizing qubits of information to perform tasks at a higher rate than classic systems.<\/p>\n

One quantum computing leader shared his take on the industry with Business Insider, laying out why he believes it is worth watching for investors seeking new opportunities.<\/p>\n

The bull case<\/p>\n

John Levy is the CEO of SEEQC, a company that produces chips for the quantum computing sector. He highlighted several key advancements, such as Google’s Willow chip<\/a> and Microsoft<\/a>‘s topological computing advancements<\/a> as big moments for the sector recently. <\/p>\n

“Advances [are] being made<\/a>, one after another after another, that are propelling the quantum industry forward,” Levy said. “We are systematically taking risk off the table and getting closer to the time when we can see quantum advantage.”<\/p>\n

Levy emphasized the difference for investors to be aware of between big tech companies with high quantum exposure and pure-play quantum companies. He credited quantum announcements with helping spur growth for both Google and IBM stocks, but also noted the importance of smaller companies that are strictly quantum-focused.<\/p>\n

Levy cited IonQ<\/a>, D-Wave Systems<\/a>,<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Rigetti Computing<\/a>\u00a0as examples of pure-play quantum stocks with high growth potential. IonQ focuses on trapped ion computing, D-Wave specializes in quantum annealing, and Rigetti operates in the superconducting space.<\/p>\n

“If you want to invest in that space, each of those companies represents a unique quantum modality or technology,” he said. “With those companies, you’re investing in the specific quantum technology that they’re invested in.”<\/p>\n

In Levy’s view, quantum computing is the next technical revolution, comparing it to AI, and eventually, the two will be much more entwined. <\/p>\n

“The next thing people are looking at is quantum, and then looking at how quantum and AI will work together,” he said, noting SEECQ’s collaboration<\/a> with Nvidia on a quantum supercomputing acceleration project.<\/p>\n

Stocks to watch <\/p>\n

As fast as the quantum computing industry develops, though, Levy also said that it can be difficult to spot the opportunities. <\/p>\n

“This limitation on the number of quantum companies means that investors really don’t have a lot of options at this point,” he stated.<\/p>\n

That said, others seem to favor bigger tech stocks over the pure-play quantum companies that Levy highlighted. Henry Yoshida, CEO of investment platform Rocket Dollar, said that while he is typically cautious with individual pure-play quantum stocks, he sees IBM, Alphabet, and Microsoft as safer ways to gain exposure to the space.<\/p>\n

“All three are investing heavily in quantum as they push hard into next-generation computing and AI infrastructure,” he stated. “These three broader tech stocks offer lower risk with long-term upside as quantum matures over the next decade.”<\/p>\n

Others see benefits in targeting both large and small tech companies with high quantum exposure.<\/p>\n

“The best public quantum computing stocks are IonQ and IBM,” stated David Materazzi, CEO of Galileo FX. “IonQ is the only pure-play with a working machine on the cloud and a long pipeline of government contracts.”<\/p>\n
