(Image credit: JAXA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"874f558c-1e78-4e60-ab1c-c05257232d22\">The HTV-X is the successor to JAXA&#8217;s H-II Transfer Vehicle (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/japanese-htv-cargo-ship-final-launch-success.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/japanese-htv-cargo-ship-final-launch-success.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HTV<\/a>), also known as Kounotori (Japanese for &#8220;White Stork&#8221;), which flew nine missions to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Space Station<\/a> (ISS) between September 2009 and May 2020.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"874f558c-1e78-4e60-ab1c-c05257232d22-1\">At 26.2 feet (8 meters) long, the new freighter is about 4 feet (1.2 m) shorter than its predecessor, but it can loft roughly the same payload mass to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit<\/a> (about 13,200 pounds, or 6,000 kilograms). The HTV-X also offers other advantages.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;HTV-X enhances transportation capabilities and adds the capability to provide various users with on-orbit demonstration opportunities for up to 1.5 years after leaving ISS until reentry,&#8221; Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which builds the HTV-X for JAXA, wrote in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mhi.com\/products\/space\/htv_x.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.mhi.com\/products\/space\/htv_x.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">description of the vehicle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3ff0765a-8ecf-42ac-a498-96f1120f8186\">The HTV-X&#8217;s potential uses also extend beyond the ISS, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/humans-in-space.jaxa.jp\/en\/htv-x\/mission\/#section01\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/humans-in-space.jaxa.jp\/en\/htv-x\/mission\/#section01\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to JAXA<\/a>. The agency envisions it aiding &#8220;post-ISS human space activities in low Earth orbit&#8221; as well as possibly flying cargo to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/lunar-gateway-view-3D-moon-orbit\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/lunar-gateway-view-3D-moon-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gateway<\/a>, the space station NASA may build in lunar orbit as part of its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>HTV-X&#8217;s debut will increase the stable of ISS cargo craft by one-third. The currently operational freighters are Russia&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32645-progress-spacecraft.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32645-progress-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Progress<\/a> vehicle and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/cygnus-spacecraft.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/cygnus-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cygnus<\/a> and Dragon, spacecraft built by the American companies Northrop Grumman and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a>, respectively.
