The Kangaroos have mingled with a music icon during their final preparations for the first Ashes Test against England in London on Sunday morning, AEDT.<\/p>\n

The Kangaroos and Jon Bon Jovi crossed paths at Wembley Stadium on the eve of the Ashes opener, with coach Kevin Walters and his squad getting a bit starstruck by meeting the 63-year-old rock god.<\/p>\n

Apparently, the feeling was mutual. The American star, on promotional duty as he returns to touring again<\/a> with the band that carries his name following “daunting” vocal cord surgery, urged his newfound mates: “Roos, get ’em tomorrow!”<\/p>\n

He posed for photos with the team, caught a long pass niftily, got introduced to Walters and even received a hug from an unnamed admirer in the green and gold.<\/p>\n

These Aussies were “tough sons of bitches”, he was heard noting admiringly, while musing about rugby league being “football without helmets”.<\/p>\n

“It was great to see him at training,” Walters said.<\/p>\n

“We didn’t know that was happening. It was good to get him in and around the boys, he was pretty popular.<\/p>\n

“I’m not sure if he’s coming to the game, but it was a good boost for our guys to meet him.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, England captain George Williams believes his side could be the group of men to finally wrestle the Ashes from Australia.<\/p>\n

It is 18,956 days since Australia beat Great Britain at Headingley to win the Ashes in 1973, kicking off 52 years of rugby league hurt for British and English fans.<\/p>\n

Williams, who has won two Super League grand finals, a World Club Challenge, Challenge Cup played 32 NRL matches for the Canberra Raiders in 2020-2021, said victory in the three-match Ashes would eclipse anything he had achieved in the game.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“If we could get this Ashes series win, it would 100 per cent top of my grand-final wins … and it would give us a lot of belief to go on and win the World Cup.”<\/p>\n

Tony Armstrong will tackle Australia’s overdue reckoning with racism in sport, with the help of some of its biggest sports stars.<\/p>\n

Williams conceded that his side had a massive challenge ahead if they were to overturn more than half a century of history.<\/p>\n

But the Warrington halfback was confident that his team was realistic about the mountain they needed to climb, and were ready to defy doubters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“They have the title as the best team in the world and rightly so with what they’ve done over a long period of time,” Williams said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Don’t get me wrong, we know how good Australia are. If we’re being honest, it’s a superior competition to Super League.<\/p>\n

“But that doesn’t mean we don’t have enough players within ours to match them. They’re human just like us, and this group is ready.<\/p>\n

“People are quick to forget what we’ve done over the last couple of years. A lot of people were talking about Samoa when we played them – and we beat them. A lot of people were saying we couldn’t beat Tonga \u2014\u00a0and we beat them.”<\/p>\n

The rugby league Ashes series between Australia and England will be shown on free-to-air television, pay television, as well as streamed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On free-to-air, the match will be broadcast by the Nine Network on its main channel, Channel 9, while also being streamed on the Nine Now app.<\/p>\n

Foxtel will also show the match on Channel 502, as well as streaming their broadcast on streaming service Kayo.\u00a0<\/p>\n

ABC Sport will have a live blog of the first Test from 11:30pm AEDT on Saturday, October 25, with live radio commentary from Wembley via the ABC Listen app.<\/p>\n
