It\u2019s the news 90s rock fans have been waiting for: The Charlatans <\/a>are releasing a brand new album after nearly a decade away.<\/p>\n

The group \u2014 now consisting of Tim Burgess<\/a>, Martin Blunt, Mark Collins, and Tony Rogers \u2014\u00a0have been a staple of British music since their debut in 1990.<\/p>\n

New album, We Are Love, marks their 14th record and frontman Tim is convinced it will \u2018somehow save the world\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018We thought that from the very beginning, and we think it now,\u2019 Tim, 58, told Metro. \u2018It\u2019s gonna somehow seep into everybody\u2019s consciousness.<\/p>\n

\u2018Everybody is going to take it. They won\u2019t understand it, maybe, at first. Who knows whether it\u2019s going to happen immediately or later but, somehow, it\u2019s going to change the world and save the world.\u2019<\/p>\n

We\u2019d started our Zoom chat with Tim casually sat on his stairs, as I told him how I\u2019d randomly become obsessed with hit song One To Another in 2016.<\/p>\n

Unlike most people who had been fans in 1997 when the song first charted, it found its way to me as the theme song of E4\u2019s sadly forgotten TV show My Mad Fat Diary.<\/p>\n

\u2018That\u2019s amazing how that works out, did it lead you in? That\u2019s great,\u2019 said the singer, revealing that the song holds a firm place in the band\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n

One to Another remains a must on any Charlatans setlist, but on October 31, there will be a slew of new songs vying for fans\u2019 attention for the first time since 2017.<\/p>\n

The Charlatans didn\u2019t intend to stay away for so long but life, Covid<\/a>, and lack of an inspiration \u2018download\u2019 got in the way of any meaningful songwriting.<\/p>\n

\u2018There was a moment where we thought, \u201cAre we gonna make a record again?\u201d\u2018 Tim confessed, \u2018We wanted it to be a good one, so the timing had to be right for us.\u2019<\/p>\n

He explained the band were simply \u2018exhausted\u2019 after their last two album, which were created in the wake of the loss of drummer Jon Brookes, who died in 2013 aged 44.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tim paused before he brought up his friend\u2019s death, considering his words as we touched on the band\u2019s ongoing \u2018history\u2019 and friendship with Oasis<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u2018Bonehead, Liam Gallagher<\/a>, and Andy Bell all turned up and did My Sweet Lord and Live Forever for Jon,\u2019 he said of the tribute night in Brookes\u2019 honour, clearly a touching moment for the singer.<\/p>\n

The event saw the likes of The Vaccines and New Order perform, with proceeds donated to The Brain Tumour Charity.<\/p>\n

With this loss in mind, it\u2019s fitting that The Charlatans chose to record their new album at Rockfield Studio, which they last used when creating 1997\u2019s beloved Telling Stories.<\/p>\n

\u2018It just felt like everything was clicking into place,\u2019 he shared, revealing how We Are Love is full of nostalgia, \u2018hauntology\u2019 and \u2018psycho geography\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018Big words like that,\u2019 the 90s icon laughed, sharing that the album features a sample of North Country Boy and some old track name-dropping to really bring everything full circle.<\/p>\n

Tim explained: \u2018[It was] using the past, acknowledging everyone that had been involved in the band in a beautiful way, and bringing them into the present, and hopefully, propelling everyone into the future as well.\u2019<\/p>\n

While they may have been \u2018facing demons head on\u2019, the familiar setting and excitement at being back together allowed for magic in the recording studio.<\/p>\n

\u2018We felt like Titans making this record, and we were just bigging each other up the whole way through it,\u2019 said Tim. \u2018I want the band to shine as brightly as I know that they can.\u2019<\/p>\n

There were some fleeting worries that maybe the world \u2014\u00a0and the bandmembers themselves \u2014\u00a0had moved on from The Charlatans, with expanding families and Covid<\/a> changing the landscape of their lives.<\/p>\n

Tim confessed things \u2018just drifted\u2019, with the group now living far away from each other and only coming together when performing at a gig.<\/p>\n

\u2018I think we got into a room and played together once, and that was in New Zealand,\u2019 he shared, referring to their 30th anniversary tour in 2022.<\/p>\n

The songwriting session in New Zealand proved a bumpy start as they were just \u2018desperate to write something\u2019 together.<\/p>\n

He laughed: \u2018[One song] was great, we recorded it\u2026 It was bad. Then later we came back again later with a new angle on it, and everyone was blown away.\u2019<\/p>\n

That \u2018bad\u2019 first attempt developed into the album\u2019s closing track, Now Everything.<\/p>\n

Inevitably, Tim shared that some songs did get left abandoned, with one tune about having a bath in the hotel not quite making the cut.<\/p>\n

\u2018It should have been the first single,\u2019 he laughed, adding that track as well as one about a party could be \u2018future bangers\u2019.<\/p>\n

Their upcoming tour promises to be packed with bangers with old favourites and at least six tracks from the new album making up the setlist.<\/p>\n

Tim added that this tour won\u2019t have an opener; instead, fans will get an extra half hour of The Charlatans to \u2018squeeze in\u2019 everything they\u2019re hoping to play.<\/p>\n

\u2018We want to play some new stuff and we want to pick some choice cuts from the past, things that are relevant to us,\u2019 he shared.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the band\u2019s 30 years, Tim called it \u2018insane\u2019 that their first album went straight to number one, which was a rarity at the time.<\/p>\n

\u2018We were some lads from the street and that just didn\u2019t happen to people like us,\u2019 he said. \u2018We were just a bunch of lads from the northwest who really thought we had some great songs. <\/p>\n

\u2018Youth culture was on our side and we continue to this day to write an album \u2014 like We Are Love \u2014 where we\u2019re actually really thinking that we\u2019re gonna save the world. <\/p>\n

\u2018That was the only thing that we all really believed in, this album\u2019s gonna save the world and there\u2019s no question about it.\u2019<\/p>\n
