{"id":226648,"date":"2025-10-26T15:07:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-26T15:07:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/226648\/"},"modified":"2025-10-26T15:07:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-26T15:07:06","slug":"could-we-blast-space-debris-out-of-harms-way-with-ion-beams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/226648\/","title":{"rendered":"Could we blast space debris out of harm&#8217;s way with ion beams?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"232d58f8-c08e-4bb3-b5e0-1cd42c9dd348\">A new space debris removal project aims to blast hazardous junk out of harm&#8217;s way from a distance, without the need for physical contact.<\/p>\n<p>Called ALBATOR, the 3.9 million Euro ($4.6 million USD) early-stage concept is examining non-kinetic methods to move <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16518-space-junk.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16518-space-junk.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space junk<\/a> out of the way of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">satellites<\/a> or objects like the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Space Station<\/a> before they threaten these spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"232d58f8-c08e-4bb3-b5e0-1cd42c9dd348-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">There could be as many as 140 million pieces of orbital space debris as small as 1 mm wide, according to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Space_Safety\/Space_Debris\/Space_debris_by_the_numbers\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Space_Safety\/Space_Debris\/Space_debris_by_the_numbers\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">European Space Agency<\/a>. Tracking systems around the world monitor the larger pieces for issues, but the problem is ever-growing as fleets of new satellites launch nearly every week.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"63feefc7-ee47-49a3-a586-4159a8b1a92f\">While companies like <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a> emphasize they have ways of avoiding collisions by maneuvering their satellites, the risk of a crash is still there \u2014 especially for older defunct objects that can&#8217;t actively move out of harm&#8217;s way. Aside from legislation aiming to avoid debris in the first place, countries and companies around the world are thinking about ways of cleaning up what&#8217;s left behind.<\/p>\n<p>The new ALBATOR project contains an acronym using letters from the phrase &#8220;ECR-Based Multicharged Ion Beam for Active Debris Removal and Other Remediation Strategies.&#8221; As the name implies, ALBATOR aims to use a type of particle beam with ions (charged electrons) to move the debris around, which means no need to touch the junk in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>This approach is distinct from other methods that require physically touching the object. Examples include huge catching nets, or <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/space-junk-cleanup-tech-that-could-shepherd-debris-into-earths-atmosphere-gets-us-patent\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/space-junk-cleanup-tech-that-could-shepherd-debris-into-earths-atmosphere-gets-us-patent\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">docking with stray objects<\/a> to force them back down into <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>ALBATOR received funding from a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/eismea.ec.europa.eu\/index_en\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/eismea.ec.europa.eu\/index_en\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">business-focused agency<\/a> of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/project\/id\/101223106\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/project\/id\/101223106\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">European Commission<\/a> in September, for a project running 3.5 years until February 2029. The project is <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7382351025082355712\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7382351025082355712\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">coordinated by Osmos X<\/a>, which is a French startup aiming to create space thrusters that will power the company&#8217;s own uncrewed space vehicles as soon as 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>Universities in Spain and Germany are participating in ALBATOR along with the Luxembourg branch of NorthStar, a company headquartered in Montreal, Canada that provides space situational awareness products.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By avoiding the risks inherent in capture or docking, the [ALBATOR] project aims to provide a safer and more versatile solution to one of the greatest challenges facing space sustainability: the proliferation of debris in Earth&#8217;s orbit,&#8221; NorthStar officials stated in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/northstar-data.com\/northstar-earth-space-europe-joins-european-consortium-to-advance-space-debris-removal-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/northstar-data.com\/northstar-earth-space-europe-joins-european-consortium-to-advance-space-debris-removal-technology\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">release last month<\/a> highlighting their participation.<\/p>\n<p>ALBATOR was funded as part of a European Innovation Council Pathfinder <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.strata.team\/eic-pathfinder-challenges-2024-call-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.strata.team\/eic-pathfinder-challenges-2024-call-results\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">early-stage program<\/a> aiming to identify and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.strata.team\/eic-pathfinder\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.strata.team\/eic-pathfinder\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">support<\/a> &#8220;breakthrough deep-tech projects, with a high degree of scientific and technological ambition and risk\u2014and potential to create new markets.&#8221; A flight date for an ALBATOR technology demonstrator has yet to be announced.<\/p>\n<p>But the need for cleanup will only accelerate, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/csl.noaa.gov\/news\/2025\/427_0428.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/csl.noaa.gov\/news\/2025\/427_0428.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to<\/a> the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
