\u201cIt\u2019s a really bad way to end the season \u2014 and it was already pretty much ruined,\u201d he admitted. \u201cMentally, it\u2019s been very tough having two big crashes within six months.\u201d<\/p>\n
Surgery in Salzburg and long road to recovery<\/p>\n
After the Guangxi crash, Wandahl received stitches in China before flying to Salzburg, where he underwent surgery to repair his jaw. \u201cThey kept me under observation for two days before flying me home,\u201d he explained. \u201cI\u2019ve also damaged a vertebra, but hopefully that will heal on its own over time.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite the injuries, Wandahl remains grateful for the support of his Red Bull \u2013 BORA \u2013 hansgrohe teammates and staff, who have guided him through both recoveries. \u201cI\u2019ve had a lot of backing and support from the team \u2014 ever since the first crash and all the way until now,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019ve really helped me a lot. Honestly, I don\u2019t think I could have got through everything without them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Looking ahead to 2026<\/p>\n
With his season officially over, Wandahl will take the rest of the year to recover before turning his attention to 2026 \u2014 when he hopes to return fully fit and ready to rebuild his promising career.<\/p>\n
\u201cRight now, it\u2019s just about getting back on my feet again and returning to everyday life step by step,\u201d he said. \u201cThen we can start looking ahead to 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n
Still only 24, Wandahl remains one of Denmark\u2019s most highly rated prospects, having finished second at the national championships in 2021 and third in 2024. Before this year\u2019s setbacks, he also achieved top-five overall finishes at Eschborn-Frankfurt and the Tour de Wallonie \u2014 results that underlined his all-round potential.<\/p>\n
For now, though, his focus is simply on recovery. \u201cIt hasn\u2019t been an easy time,\u201d he admitted. \u201cBut I\u2019m staying positive.
