{"id":228491,"date":"2025-10-27T16:50:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T16:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/228491\/"},"modified":"2025-10-27T16:50:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T16:50:10","slug":"the-solar-system-on-demand-heo-robotics-aims-to-push-spacecraft-imaging-deep-into-the-final-frontier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/228491\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;The solar system on demand&#8217;: HEO Robotics aims to push spacecraft imaging deep into the final frontier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"b6ea3ca8-ebf3-4b03-94be-35f96c9fcd68\">An Australian firm leading the way in providing images of spacecraft in low Earth orbit is making moves to expand its capabilities to higher orbits \u2014 and possibly, in the long run, to solar system destinations.<\/p>\n<p>HEO, also known as HEO Robotics, has made a splash with sensational images of spacecraft in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit<\/a> (LEO) that were taken by other spacecraft, or &#8220;non-Earth imaging&#8221; (NEI). Prominent examples include <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/international-space-station-satellite-photo-heo-robotics\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/international-space-station-satellite-photo-heo-robotics\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">closeups<\/a> of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Space Station<\/a> (ISS) and China&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/china-space-station-commercial-imaging-tracked\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/china-space-station-commercial-imaging-tracked\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tiangong space station<\/a>, as well as photos of the European Space Agency&#8217;s ERS-2 satellite as it <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/satellite-ers-2-esa-heo-robotics-commercial-imaging-photos\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/satellite-ers-2-esa-heo-robotics-commercial-imaging-photos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tumbled into Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a> in February 2024. Such images are taken during calculated close approaches to spacecraft of interest by partner satellites.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"b6ea3ca8-ebf3-4b03-94be-35f96c9fcd68-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">While these photos are striking, clients can also obtain images they need for anomaly detection, operational awareness and risk mitigation, as well as more general space domain awareness, or the ability to track, identify and understand the behavior of satellites and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/kessler-syndrome-space-debris\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/kessler-syndrome-space-debris\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space debris<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"f91615cd-5722-4086-af26-bc70fd176f1b\">Will Crowe, co-founder and chief executive of HEO, spoke with Space.com at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Sydney in early October, describing the company&#8217;s plans to deliver images of spacecraft and more even farther away from Earth.<\/p>\n<p>HEO, founded in 2019, began as an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/could-asteroid-mining-actually-work-maybe-if-we-start-with-impact-sites-on-the-moon\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/could-asteroid-mining-actually-work-maybe-if-we-start-with-impact-sites-on-the-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid-mining venture<\/a> but quickly pivoted to find a business case. It started pushing boundaries as soon as it began imaging spacecraft, though what was possible or not was not immediately clear.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The national security establishment has already been doing this for five decades but thought that no one could replicate it, so they made it highly classified,&#8221; Crowe said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No one without a classification knew it was possible because it was just very secretive,&#8221; he added, laughing. &#8220;But we didn&#8217;t know we shouldn&#8217;t know that, so we just started playing, and there was no one to stop us, because we&#8217;re here in Australia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>The company is now looking to advance to providing images of spacecraft in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29222-geosynchronous-orbit.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29222-geosynchronous-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">geostationary orbit<\/a> (GEO), a special orbit at which satellites orbit at a speed that keeps them effectively fixed over a spot on the equator 22,236 miles (35,786 kilometers) below. GEO is inhabited by, among other craft, high-value communications and weather satellites.<\/p>\n<p>HEO does not operate its own satellites. In terms of acquiring images, HEO partners with a range of Earth-imaging companies such as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/rocket-lab-launch-blacksky-first-gen-3-satellite\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/rocket-lab-launch-blacksky-first-gen-3-satellite\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blacksky<\/a> and Satellogic and makes use of the satellites when they are not active \u2014 for example, when they&#8217;re passing over the oceans. But GEO, unlike LEO, has a scarcity of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">satellites<\/a> with cameras. This means HEO will be looking to get its own imagers and sensors and required software on satellites getting ready for the trip to GEO.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Getting to GEO is going to be very challenging, so we&#8217;re focused on that right now,&#8221; Crowe said. &#8220;Huge revenue unlock for us, huge capability unlock for our customers. So that&#8217;s our main technical goal over the next 12 months.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>The company also <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heospace.com\/resources\/stories\/astroscale-and-heo-advance-space-monitoring-capabilities-for-allied-nations\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.heospace.com\/resources\/stories\/astroscale-and-heo-advance-space-monitoring-capabilities-for-allied-nations\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">signed<\/a> a three-year memorandum of understanding with satellite servicing and orbital sustainability firm Astroscale at IAC in Sydney, deepening cooperation on monitoring, assessing and ultimately servicing allied defense, government and commercial assets.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, Astroscale has performed a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astroscale-debris-removal-adras-j-video\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astroscale-debris-removal-adras-j-video\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fly-around of a spent rocket stage<\/a> in orbit, as part of its plans to start <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astroscale-contract-adras-space-junk-removal\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astroscale-contract-adras-space-junk-removal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deorbiting pieces of space junk<\/a>. HEO can help with such operations, Crowe explained. &#8220;It&#8217;s just good practice to have outside eyes looking in. (Image credit: HEO Robotics)<\/p>\n<p id=\"8e961c2f-51d6-46bf-b520-ca2fb5f31cc3\">HEO also recently received the first National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Tier-3 license for a commercial optical camera operating in high LEO (above 800 kilometers, or 500 miles), a sign of growing official recognition of non-Earth imaging as part of space safety infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>This expansion to a higher Earth orbit is, however, just another step in a broader plan. The long term vision? &#8220;The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a> on demand,&#8221; said Crowe. &#8220;If you want to go see an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid<\/a>, we will enable that mission.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re starting with just the asteroids that are coming through the Earth-moon system,&#8221; he added. &#8220;But there&#8217;s no reason why we can&#8217;t enable it for everything: the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16105-asteroid-belt.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16105-asteroid-belt.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid belt<\/a> or all the other various asteroid classes. It should be possible.
