{"id":229746,"date":"2025-10-28T08:34:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-28T08:34:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/229746\/"},"modified":"2025-10-28T08:34:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T08:34:12","slug":"im-not-the-most-gifted-rider-but-ive-worked-very-hard-for-this-galler-and-macfarlane-conquer-bank-road-at-british-national-hill-climb-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/229746\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;I&#8217;m not the most gifted rider but I&#8217;ve worked very hard for this&#8217; \u2013 Galler and MacFarlane conquer Bank Road at British National Hill-Climb Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"45c33b2a-6e05-42cc-9628-aa4c40749073\">Rachel Galler and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/i-targeted-around-600-watts-unfortunately-i-forgot-to-calibrate-my-power-meter-2024-hill-climb-champ-shares-his-strategies\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/fitness\/i-targeted-around-600-watts-unfortunately-i-forgot-to-calibrate-my-power-meter-2024-hill-climb-champ-shares-his-strategies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harry MacFarlane<\/a> conquered Bank Road to win the British National Hill-Climb Championships on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The venue was Bank Road in Matlock, Derbyshire, in the centre of England, an 804 metre course with 101.4 metres of elevation gain; a casual average gradient of 12.45%.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"45c33b2a-6e05-42cc-9628-aa4c40749073-2\">The goal is simple \u2013 to be the fastest up the hill \u2013 and Galler and MacFarlane duly obliged.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">After fifth-place last year in Hexham, FTP (Fulfil the Potential)&#8217;s Galler went two seconds quicker than defending champion <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/its-harder-than-almost-every-climb-ive-done-illi-gardner-sets-the-all-time-record-on-mt-washington\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/its-harder-than-almost-every-climb-ive-done-illi-gardner-sets-the-all-time-record-on-mt-washington\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Illi Gardner<\/a> (Cardiff Ajax CC) to take the crown, in 2:59.8. Gardner had won the previous three editions, but could not quite match the power required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Maddie Heywood (Elevate RT) was third, three seconds behind Gardner, to step up to the podium for the first time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;I&#8217;m very much looking forward to taking the jersey back home to the North East and getting it on my back for the hill climb season next year,&#8221; Galler said, who had won all three hill climbs she rode in the lead-up to the championships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;This is a massive win for me. I&#8217;m not the most gifted rider but I&#8217;ve worked very hard for this. Congrats to everyone else, today was mega and a day I&#8217;ll never forget.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Third-placed Heywood led Elevate Race Team to the team prize alongside Lucy Deschamps and Ellen Reynolds, while there was a new junior girls\u2019 course record set by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/from-doing-tricks-on-her-rollers-to-junior-national-champ-ruby-isaac-on-life-racing-and-inspiring-other-girls-to-get-cycling\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/from-doing-tricks-on-her-rollers-to-junior-national-champ-ruby-isaac-on-life-racing-and-inspiring-other-girls-to-get-cycling\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ruby Isaac<\/a> (Tofauti Everyone Active) in 3:24.6 to win that category by over 14 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac\u2019s victory was all the more impressive given that just three months earlier she broke both wrists in a crash at the Nations Cup at Watersley in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:66.67%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/uViKGiUDnHvAS7ErqFxtoS.jpg\" alt=\"Harry MacFarlane rides up Bank Road at the 2025 National Hill-Climb Championships\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/uViKGiUDnHvAS7ErqFxtoS.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/uViKGiUDnHvAS7ErqFxtoS.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Future\/Andy Jones)<\/p>\n<p id=\"d084d320-f792-4938-8b00-27e38196bf3c\">Defending men&#8217;s champion MacFarlane (Rule 28-Outliers) was the last of 460 riders to set off, and scorched up Bank Road in 2:14.7, a course-record performance. Second-place Kieron Wynne-Cattanach (Team Lifting Gear Products) was five seconds behind, with four-time former champion <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/he-didnt-manage-to-catch-me-tadej-pogacar-beaten-by-british-hill-climber-at-event-in-slovenia\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/he-didnt-manage-to-catch-me-tadej-pogacar-beaten-by-british-hill-climber-at-event-in-slovenia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Feather<\/a> (HuntBikeWheels.com) in third, under a second behind.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It\u2019s been a fantastic day,&#8221; MacFarlane said post-race. &#8220;It was a bit of a funny one having the national champion\u2019s stripes for a year, so much can change in that time and when I came into the season I wasn\u2019t sure how I\u2019d go on a shorter course.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m quite good at putting myself down and writing myself off almost, but I surprised myself at different points through the hill climb season, winning events I didn\u2019t think I would.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s championship victory was a surprise to MacFarlane, but this year was different, with added pressure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don\u2019t generally get nervous before races but this year I did for sure,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;And being off so late it was hard to know what to eat and how to prepare.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I went down to spectate before my ride and it was really cold, but the atmosphere and the crowds were great.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had a super light bike this time which was better than last year. I didn\u2019t mess around with the heavy 360-degree camera, because I knew the win was possible. I\u2019ve had a lot of rest this week so I felt really good on the climb and my legs felt amazing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The margin that I won by was astounding, I was really happy with that.
