\n\tPrunella Scales<\/a>, the actress best known for playing Sybil Fawlty, the intimidating hotel manager wife of John Cleese<\/a>\u2018s Basil on the iconic \u201970s British sitcom \u201cFawlty Towers<\/a>,\u201d died on Monday. She was 93.<\/p>\n

\n\tHer sons, Samuel and Joseph West, confirmed her death to news agency PA Media on Tuesday, saying Scales died \u201cpeacefully at home in London yesterday.\u201d She was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2013.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAlthough dementia forced her retirement from a remarkable acting career of nearly 70 years, she continued to live at home. She was watching \u2018Fawlty Towers\u2019 the day before she died,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cWe would like to thank all those who gave Pru such wonderful care at the end of her life: her last days were comfortable, contented and surrounded by love.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBeyond her performance in \u201cFawlty Towers,\u201d which ran on BBC Two from 1975 to 1979, Scales earned a BAFTA nomination for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in Alan Bennett\u2019s 1991 televised play \u201cA Question of Attribution.\u201d From 2014 to 2020, she co-hosted the docuseries \u201cGreat Canal Journeys\u201d alongside her husband, the late actor Timothy West, in which they explored Britain\u2019s waterways.<\/p>\n

\n\tScales began her career in 1951 as an assistant stage manager at the Bristol Old Vic and began acting in plays and small films in the \u201950s and early \u201960s. She earned her first big break starring in the sitcom \u201cMarriage Lines\u201d alongside Richard Briers from 1963 to 1966, and then rose to prominence when she was cast as Sybil Fawlty in \u201cFawlty Towers\u201d in the mid \u201970s. Her other credits include the series \u201cMapp & Lucia\u201d from 1985-1986, and films including \u201cThe Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne\u201d (1987), \u201cHowards End\u201d (1992), \u201cWolf\u201d (1994) and \u201cAn Awfully Big Adventure\u201d (1995).<\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition to her sons, Scales is survived by one stepdaughter, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
