OK, so he might be a little different. He might have far more swagger, and he certainly has a far better croon, but Jones has always presented himself as a man of the people, and his final swansong suggests that.

Spending hours dreaming about one’s own departure from this mortal coil isn’t necessarily the best way to spend the day, but for a true music lover, it is an essential part of one’s life. Unlike the rest of us, however, Jones has opted for an act with whom he has previously shared the stage.

When Jones landed his own television show in 1969, there was one name that he was desperate to collaborate with: the great Jerry Lee Lewis. A couple of years earlier, the Welshman had been in attendance to witness Lewis perform live in Cardiff; then, fast forward through a series of chart-topping years, and the duo were singing together in front of millions. Lewis, it goes without saying, is also behind the track Jones would like to have played at his funeral.

Jones’ show may have only run for three seasons, but it allowed him to perform alongside some of his heroes, many of whom would become greats in their own right. However, very few moments from the show would have provided Jones with more joy than performing with Lewis.

The song that converted him was the 1958 effort ‘Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On’. At that time, Jones was a talented teenager who fostered ambitions to become a professional recording artist, even though that usually doesn’t happen to someone from Pontypridd.

Tom Jones in his car. (Credits: Bent Rej)

“I’d been a fan of Jerry Lee’s ever since I heard that song,” he once said about ‘Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On’. “Elvis had come out with ‘Heartbreak Hotel’, which was the first major hit, and everybody was going, ‘Wow! He’s a freak of nature, a white guy singing like that.’ So when Whole Lotta Shakin’ came out that was it. I realise it must be a Southern thing – white people growing up with black people, and it was all rubbing off, you know what I mean?”

Jones also covered ‘End Of The Road’ by Lewis on his collaborative album with Jools Holland, released in 2004. However, it was a different track that he wanted to be his curtain call. Jones has always employed a terrific wit during his interviews and in the public eye. It is part of why he was given his own TV show. And it would seem he had a little tongue in cheek for his funeral song selection.

It was the Lewis song, ‘Great Balls Of Fire’, that he elected as the song he wants to be played at his funeral during a conversation with NME. “It’s always been a favourite of mine,” he explained. “If someone wants me to sing something, I’ve always said: ‘If in doubt, do ‘Great Balls Of Fire’. But at my funeral, I’d have to play the original 1957 version released on Sun Records.”

‘Great Balls Of Fire’ was the follow-up single to ‘Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On’, and topped the chart in the United Kingdom. It remains the only track by Lewis to have achieved this feat, and it evidently touched Jones to his very core.

Jones, now in his 80s, was forced to stare mortality in the face following the loss of his wife, Linda, in 2016. The couple had been married since they were teenagers, and her sudden death was a painful reminder that life is temporary.

On his most recent album, Surrounded By Time, the Welshman approaches his sorrow on the heartbreaking ‘I Won’t Lie’, a re-imagining of a Michael Kiwanuka song. In the effort, he emotionally sings: “You never leave me, You’ll always be part of the person I’ll become, And I’ll never leave you, You give me memories that I know could never leave.”

Speaking to Far Out about the loss of his wife, with whom he’d been in a relationship since he was 12, Jones admitted: “I didn’t think that I was going to make it. It really was just the lowest point of my life. We talked for two weeks in hospital in Los Angeles, and my son was there. She said you two have got to look after one another now and hold each other up.”

He continued: “Because she was my strength, you see, she didn’t take any bullshit from me. I remember I had this house on St. George’s Hill in the late ’60s, early ’70s, I had some friends over from the States, and we were all playing snooker. I think I must have been getting too large, with champagne, cigars and blowing my own trumpet”.

Jones added: “She said, ‘Excuse me, you don’t really think you’re Tom Jones, do you?’ I said, ‘Of course, I am,’ and she said, ‘It was Tommy Woodward I married, don’t give me this crap’. This fella I was playing snooker with from New York said he’d never heard anyone speak to me like that, and I said, ‘She’s the only one who can, but she’s telling the truth’.”

A life led with such love is truly a life worth living. And when the tragic day does come for Jones’ wake just know that he will have spent so much of his time living the life he wanted to, and, in the end, even got to crack a joke, too.

Related Topics

(Credits: Bent Rej) Wed 29 October 2025 10:28, UK Most music fans have spent a considerable amount of…

[28
96,80065,128,42625,56,54,55
0":"post-231975","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-music","8":"tag-entertainment","9":"tag-jerry-lee-lewis","10":"tag-music","11":"tag-tom-jones","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom","14":"tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
