{"id":232036,"date":"2025-10-29T12:41:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T12:41:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/232036\/"},"modified":"2025-10-29T12:41:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T12:41:07","slug":"lab-monkeys-that-escaped-captivity-in-mississippi-are-not-carrying-diseases-university-says-mississippi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/232036\/","title":{"rendered":"Lab monkeys that escaped captivity in Mississippi are not carrying diseases, university says | Mississippi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A group of monkeys being transported on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/mississippi\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mississippi<\/a> highway that escaped captivity Tuesday after the truck carrying them overturned did not carry a dangerous infectious disease, a university has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The truck was carrying rhesus monkeys, which typically weigh around 16lbs (7.7kg) and are among the most medically studied animals on the planet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Video shows monkeys crawling through tall grass on the side of Interstate 59 just north of Heidelberg, Mississippi, with wooden crates labeled \u201clive animals\u201d crumpled and strewn about.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The local sheriff\u2019s department initially said the monkeys were carrying diseases including herpes, but Tulane University said in a statement that the monkeys \u201chave not been exposed to any infectious agent\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">All but one of the escaped monkeys were killed, the Jasper county sheriff\u2019s department said in a post on Facebook, warning that the monkeys were \u201caggressive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They were being housed at the Tulane University National Biomedical Research Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, which routinely provides primates to scientific research organizations, according to the university.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The crash happened about 100 miles (160km) from the state capital of Jackson.
