For the first time in almost twenty years, Matt White had the summer to himself.<\/p>\n

After being unexpectedly dismissed by Jayco AlUla in May, the Australian took a well-deserved break from the chaos of professional cycling, but he\u2019s back. The batteries are recharged, and he\u2019s ready for a new challenge as he takes charge of Movistar\u2019s new-look Racing Department alongside Jose\u0301 Vicente Garci\u0301a.<\/p>\n

Last week, he attended Movistar\u2019s first off-season camp, meeting his new colleagues and the team he\u2019ll work with next season, and we caught up with him after his first day on the job.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s what I\u2019ve been expecting, with a really good group of people welcoming me into the team, and I\u2019m looking forward to it. I was on the same team for 14 years, at Movistar, I know about 25 people, so there are more than 100 new faces to get to know. It\u2019s an exciting challenge and a new chapter for me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Heading to Movistar wasn\u2019t necessarily where many would have placed White when he began looking for a new role in May, and while there was interest from at least one other men\u2019s WorldTour squad and one of the best women\u2019s WorldTour teams, he eventually signed with Movistar.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been an organisation that\u2019s been around longer than any other, and that comes with a lot of respect after what they\u2019ve done over the years. Cycling is a small sport, and at the end of the day, you can\u2019t hide from who you are, and all I\u2019ve heard from people in and out of the team are great things about the staff, the roster and the way that they treat people. That\u2019s the type of organisation that I wanted to work in, and also they\u2019ve said they wanted to make some changes in the team, whilst keeping their DNA, and they see me as part of that,\u201d White said.<\/p>\n
