Trump has been getting what he wants on his Asia trip so far. <\/p>\n

In Malaysia, it was participation in a normalisation agreement between Cambodia and Thailand \u2013 adding to the list of \u201cpeace deals\u201d he can claim to have brokered. <\/p>\n

In Tokyo, he received a gushing reception from new prime minister Sanae Takaichi, a disciple of the late Shinzo Abe, who had a close relationship with Trump. <\/p>\n

Takaichi gifted Trump Shinzo Abe\u2019s golf bag and putter (the two men shared a passion for the sport).
\nThere were signed deals to announce as well \u2013 one promising to usher in a \u201cgolden age\u201d of US-Japan relations, and another pledging cooperation on critical mineral extraction and processing. <\/p>\n

South Korea welcomed Trump with a military band playing YMCA \u2013 the Village People hit that has become a Trump rally anthem \u2013 gave Trump a fancy award and the replica of an ancient crown. <\/p>\n

All of this is a warm-up for Thursday\u2019s meeting with Xi in Busan, however. China is the \u201cbig enchilada\u201d in US trade relations, to steal a phrase from Richard Nixon, an American president who knew a thing or two about tense \u2013 but productive \u2013 Sino-American relations. <\/p>\n
