The striking colours have long captivated humans and we now know that they are down to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/travel\/news\/2026-set-best-year-decade-35912549\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">charged particles from the Sun<\/a>, or solar winds, colliding with gases in Earth&#8217;s upper atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">And if you have clear skies tonight you may have the opportunity to see amazing colours although the further north the better. Photographs of aurora are likely from anywhere in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">But as well as the spectacular Northern Lights, there has been plenty of talk about an interstellar comet 3I\/Atlas after it was first sighted from a telescope in Chile in July &#8211; where it was confirmed that it had come from another star system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">At that stage, it was 416 million miles from the sun, out near Jupiter, and heading this way at a blistering 37 miles per second. And NASA said it is currently scooting by the Earth as it makes its closest approach to the sun.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761796030_481_0_BESTPIX-Northern-Lights-Are-Seen-In-The-South-Of-England.jpg\" alt=\"The Aurora Borealis lighting up the night sky over Pitstone Windmill in Buckinghamshire last year\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The Aurora Borealis lighting up the night sky over Pitstone Windmill in Buckinghamshire last year(Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">There has also been plenty of debate about the comet due to its unusual appearance and behaviour, with Harvard theoretical physicist Avi Loeb warning for months that the object could be an &#8220;extraterrestrial artefact&#8221;, which may be about to make first contact with Earth today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">While he has received plenty of criticism because of his theories, the latest developments show an interesting development in the object.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Hubble Space Telescope images captured the &#8220;comet&#8221; with an unusual &#8220;anti-tail&#8221; \u2013 a jet of particles streaming towards the Sun. New high-resolution observations from the Nordic Optical Telescope in the Canary Islands confirm the anti-tail seen in July and August has vanished.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">While NASA claims the object will simply pass us by untouched \u2013 Mr Loeb think it is up to no good, reported the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailystar.co.uk\/news\/latest-news\/alien-ship-3iatlas-reach-earth-36149051\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Daily Star<\/a>.
