A father who caused a woman’s death by driving dangerously during a cocaine “comedown” has been jailed for six years.<\/p>\n

Christopher Lynn, 32, crashed into a car driven by Yvonne Nichol on the A7 in the Scottish Borders, causing it to swerve onto the opposite carriageway and collide with an oncoming vehicle.<\/p>\n

Ms Nichol, 64, was taken to hospital but died a short time later, while the two occupants of the other car were seriously injured in the incident near Ashkirk on 15 August 2023.<\/p>\n

A court heard Lynn was driving his Ford Ranger pick-up at 81mph seconds before the impact with Ms Nichol’s Vauxhall Astra and was in the “comedown” phase after taking cocaine the day before.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Lynn pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving at a hearing at the High Court in Glasgow.<\/p>\n

As part of the charge, he admitted driving “while impaired having consumed cocaine” and driving at “excessive speed”.<\/p>\n

At the High Court in Edinburgh on Thursday, judge Lord Clark sentenced Lynn to six years in prison.<\/p>\n

Lynn, who was appearing via video-link from HMP Barlinnie in Glasgow, was also disqualified from driving for nine years.<\/p>\n

Lord Clark said the crash happened in a 60mph zone, but Lynn should have been restricted to 50mph because he was driving a light goods vehicle.<\/p>\n

The judge said: “You had ingested cocaine and you were on the comedown from cocaine, which can cause a lack of concentration, distraction and fatigue.<\/p>\n

“You were travelling at 81mph seconds before the crash with the white Astra driven by Yvonne Nichol.”<\/p>\n

Lord Clark said victim impact statements from the families of Ms Nichol and other victims were “harrowing” to read.<\/p>\n

He stated: “There is no sentence I can impose that can in any way alleviate the devastating consequences of your actions for the individuals and the family members.”<\/p>\n

Defence advocate Victoria Dow said the father-of-one, from Dalkeith in Midlothian, had previously led a “blameless and worthwhile life”.<\/p>\n

The court earlier heard that Lynn was a director in a family business and his role was in groundwork, fire protection and health and safety.<\/p>\n

Ms Dow said: “He is a man who deeply regrets his behaviour that led to this devastating accident.<\/p>\n

“No one is more acutely aware of the seriousness of the consequences than Mr Lynn himself.
