{"id":235061,"date":"2025-10-31T01:45:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T01:45:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/235061\/"},"modified":"2025-10-31T01:45:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T01:45:13","slug":"organiser-of-forbidden-track-cycling-series-insists-it-will-be-implemented-apologises-for-launch-delays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/235061\/","title":{"rendered":"Organiser of &#8216;forbidden&#8217; track cycling series insists it &#8216;will be implemented&#8217;, apologises for launch delays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"ca267daa-9ff2-4dee-b896-5e22fa235d17\">The organiser of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/global-track-series-with-blockbuster-pound500000-per-event-prize-fund-coming-in-2024\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/global-track-series-with-blockbuster-pound500000-per-event-prize-fund-coming-in-2024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DerbyWheel<\/a> keirin series, ruled to be a \u201cforbidden event\u201d by the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/uci\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/uci\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UCI<\/a> two years ago, has said the project is \u201cmoving forward\u201d and \u201cwill be implemented\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The new track cycling series was first announced in October 2023, promising a mammoth prize pot of $600,000 (\u00a3455,000) for each round.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"ca267daa-9ff2-4dee-b896-5e22fa235d17-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">It planned to follow a similar model to pro <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/keirin-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-tokyo-2020-olympic-keirin-event\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/keirin-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-tokyo-2020-olympic-keirin-event\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">keirin<\/a> racing in Japan, with events expected to be distributed as sports betting content around the world.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Rider inductions took place in early 2024, and a test event was scheduled for last April, but was postponed after the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/uci-rules-new-track-cycling-series-a-forbidden-event-and-threatens-to-fine-riders\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/uci-rules-new-track-cycling-series-a-forbidden-event-and-threatens-to-fine-riders\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UCI refused to authorise the series<\/a>, and threatened fines and suspensions for UCI-licensed riders who compete in it.<\/p>\n<p>DerbyWheel\u2019s president DJ Hyun has now released a statement, a year and a half on, apologising for delays and a lack of updates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to a combination of internal and external challenges, DerbyWheel has been unable to operate normally for over a year,\u201d Hyun wrote, adding that the series has experienced \u201csignificant difficulties\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the head of DerbyWheel\u2019s race operations stepped down, and recruitment into the role is still underway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">The latest race content, interviews, features, reviews and expert buying guides, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p>Hyun also explained that, due to the launch delays, the series needs to renew its deals with riders, venues and partners. \u201cOnce these improvements are completed early next year, and all stakeholders are aligned, we expect to confirm a revised launch plan and resume regular race operations soon after,\u201d the DerbyWheel president said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough it remains difficult to specify an exact date for the launch of regular races, we want to assure all DW players and partners that the project is moving forward with commitment and care.
