That same day, UPS announced 48,000 layoffs, and GM followed on Wednesday with more than 1,700\u00a0layoffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Even before the major layoffs from this week, layoffs had already been on the rise, according<\/a> to data shared with CBS News. From January to September, about 950,000 were eliminated, the largest number since 2020, when the pandemic led to 2 million job cuts through September of that year.As job insecurity looms for many and SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits are set to run out<\/a> on Saturday, Nov. 1, affecting roughly 42 million Americans amid the ongoing government shutdown, some people are calling the overlap “an absolutely disastrous pairing.”<\/p>\n
