{"id":236,"date":"2025-07-14T12:08:05","date_gmt":"2025-07-14T12:08:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/236\/"},"modified":"2025-07-14T12:08:05","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T12:08:05","slug":"nhs-patients-sent-new-skin-patches-to-attach-themselves-at-home-which-can-detect-common-heart-problems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/236\/","title":{"rendered":"NHS patients sent new skin patches to attach themselves at home which can detect common heart problems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"author-section byline-plain\">By XANTHA LEATHAM EXECUTIVE SCIENCE EDITOR FOR THE DAILY MAIL <\/p>\n<p class=\"byline-section\"> Published:  00:21 BST, 14 July 2025   |  Updated:  02:12 BST, 14 July 2025   <\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">DIY heart monitors that stick to the skin to detect heart rhythm problems are starting to be brought in by the <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/nhs\/index.html\" id=\"mol-4704a150-603e-11f0-95c9-7378b316337f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NHS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The small patches, which patients wear for a few days, can be posted out for them to attach at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They represent a huge leap forward from traditional devices, which require set-up by a trained physiologist and involve numerous wires and monitors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">And they could be used to investigate some of the most common heart problems including atrial fibrillation \u2013 a condition where the heart beats irregularly \u2013 tachycardia, when the heart beats too fast, and heart blocks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, in Surrey, is the first hospital in the country to roll out the device, with hopes that it will soon be used across other NHS trusts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Iain Sim, a consultant cardiac electrophysiologist at Frimley Health, said: \u2018Atrial fibrillation is a really important and common condition that we pick up with these devices, and we\u2019re increasingly looking at whether we can use them to help detect AF that\u2019s not symptomatic, and whether people are at increased risk of stroke that we don\u2019t know about.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The Trust said it will still use traditional devices, known as Holter monitors, on some patients who are in hospital. But many outpatients will be able to access the new ePatch, which is made by Philips, to use at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">After the monitor is worn for a few days patients can post it back, which will cut out the need for appointments to fit and remove the equipment.
