Someone who likes it when the roads are quieter, only the narrow stretch of road illuminated in front of you,<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/group-tests\/cycling-lights-buyers-guide-141811\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/group-tests\/cycling-lights-buyers-guide-141811\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> rear lights<\/a> flickering? If this sounds like a bit of you, I\u2019ll bet you&#8217;re not a woman. And this isn\u2019t because women don\u2019t want to cycle at night &#8211; it\u2019s because, for many of us, it\u2019s much less safe.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone has their own go-to protection methods. As girls, we\u2019re taught to carry our keys poking out of our fists when walking home, to talk to someone on the phone, to stick to busy, well-lit roads &#8211; to avoid making eye contact with passers by.<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=92X1623320&amp;xcust=cyclingweekly_us_1256258564247888651&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fyougov.co.uk%2Fsociety%2Farticles%2F41407-how-often-do-british-women-feel-unsafe-doing-day-d&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cyclingweekly.com%2Fnews%2Four-plan-wasnt-to-be-rowdy-or-reckless-we-were-just-taking-up-some-space-the-women-reclaiming-night-rides-reminding-us-all-of-the-safety-issues-female-cyclists-face\" data-url=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/society\/articles\/41407-how-often-do-british-women-feel-unsafe-doing-day-d\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"sponsored noopener nofollow\" data-hl-processed=\"skimlinks\" data-placeholder-url=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=92X1623320&amp;xcust=hawk-custom-tracking&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fyougov.co.uk%2Fsociety%2Farticles%2F41407-how-often-do-british-women-feel-unsafe-doing-day-d&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cyclingweekly.com%2Fnews%2Four-plan-wasnt-to-be-rowdy-or-reckless-we-were-just-taking-up-some-space-the-women-reclaiming-night-rides-reminding-us-all-of-the-safety-issues-female-cyclists-face\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\" data-merchant-name=\"yougov.co.uk\" data-merchant-network=\"SkimLinks\"> A 2022 YouGov poll <\/a>found that 66% of women felt unsafe walking home at night, with another 20% not venturing out at night for safety reasons. And, sadly, the danger extends to night-time rides, too.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"541022e5-c8a0-419d-b914-b504a8e1e078-2\">In Sheffield, Chella Quint dodges quiet roads that would get her home quicker, to instead weave a path past familiar pubs (with friendly bouncers) and bustling streets. Claire Sharpe was cycling <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/latest-news\/bath-spa-students-benefit-from-new-traffic-free-cycle-path-165554\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/latest-news\/bath-spa-students-benefit-from-new-traffic-free-cycle-path-165554\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Bristol to Bath path <\/a>recently, and a teenager on an electric bike rammed her rear wheel: \u201cit was just so reckless and unnecessary &#8211; I wonder if he\u2019d have done that to a bloke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never let the dark stop me,\u201d Sarah Round said. This was the Glow Ride, co-ordinated by Cycling UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looked like something between a rave on wheels or a parade of Christmas decorations,\u201d Quint told Cycling Weekly of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffieldcycling4all.org\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.sheffieldcycling4all.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sheffield Cycling 4 All\u2019s <\/a>ride around the city. \u201cThere was an excellent playlist of old-school floor fillers and recent pop songs. The ride itself was joyful and steady &#8211; you could chat with people and compliment their bikes.\u201d Quint even had the chance to thank their local MP about the new cycle hangers they\u2019d help install across the city.<\/p>\n<p>In Birmingham, Round and the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/bicycleadventureclub.co.uk\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/bicycleadventureclub.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bicycle Adventure Club<\/a> used local cycle paths and parks to weave a 10km route through the city. \u201cOne lady rode with her son,&#8221; Round said. &#8220;He was only five and pedalled most of the way himself before mum turned his bike into a trailer to help him. Though it is an irony Quint shared, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, just after the ride, a woman we\u2019d met earlier came back upset,\u201d Quint explained. \u201cSome teens had harassed her just as she\u2019d set off for home (name-calling, following). She didn\u2019t feel safe, so we regrouped and formed a little \u2018bike bus\u2019 to see everyone home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it&#8217;s important to get women together,&#8221; Sharpe said. &#8220;It&#8217;s the same as just blokes riding together, which is the way it&#8217;s been for a long time, but just a bit different. The conversation tracks different. And yeah, it&#8217;s just a nice space to be in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/9LDL3uPpgzE6oqv7fHr4D3.png\" alt=\"A basket lit up and a sign\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/9LDL3uPpgzE6oqv7fHr4D3.png\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/9LDL3uPpgzE6oqv7fHr4D3.png\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Some decorations form Bristol&#8217;s Glow Ride <\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Claire Sharpe)<\/p>\n<p id=\"74175dbe-9c3d-4c19-8de0-863f5b648e65\">\u201cCycling with other women normalises different paces, body types, abilities, and cycles,&#8221; Quint continued. &#8220;But it also supports anyone who doesn\u2019t fit the \u201cslim guys in lycra\u201d image of cyclists &#8211; whether they\u2019re disabled, or people of size, or queer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Round is already planning more group night rides to come, &#8220;to get people out cycling whatever the light conditions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But the Glow Ride has also highlighted something Quint has long been thinking. \u201cWe need protected, continuous lanes with proper night-time lighting and side-road priority,\u201d they said. Their list of necessary improvements is long, some tangible and urgent (wider cycling parking bays and lanes for adaptive bikes, like Quint\u2019s) and some about slower-paced cultural change &#8211; bikes being encouraged into family life as they are in the Netherlands, normalising cycling for those with additional physical needs, and providing the necessary education, technology and infrastructure to support it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Glow Ride proves demand. When you light the city properly &#8211; literally and figuratively &#8211; people of all abilities show up,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That is what will sustain cycling.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Are you a night-time cyclist?
