{"id":23633,"date":"2025-07-25T21:19:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-25T21:19:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/23633\/"},"modified":"2025-07-25T21:19:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T21:19:13","slug":"sam-burgess-under-investigation-by-rfl-and-two-former-super-league-coaches-fined-for-comments-about-match-officials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/23633\/","title":{"rendered":"Sam Burgess under investigation by RFL and two former Super League coaches fined for comments about match officials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"1200\" height=\"836\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/AM10767.jpg\" class=\"attachment- size- wp-post-image\" alt=\"Super League boss Sam Burgess\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"  \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Sam Burgess is currently under investigation by the RFL following comments made about match officials after their defeat to Castleford Tigers last week, and two former Super League coaches have also been fined for similar remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Burgess aired his frustrations about video referee Liam Rush last Sunday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seriousaboutrl.com\/rugby-league-news-past-the-point-of-frustration-sam-burgess-slams-video-referee-decision-after-warrington-wolves-defeat-106612\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">following a controversial penalty try snub<\/a>, and he now has seven days to respond to the RFL Compliance department.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugby-league.com\/article\/64042\/rfl-compliance-%E2%80%93-update-(friday-july-25)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">In a statement<\/a>, the RFL has said: \u201cThis compliance action follows a note that was sent to all clubs in May expressing concern at the increasing number of public comments by head coaches relating to match officials and stressing that comments deemed to be public criticism of match officials breaching the relevant operational rules and the sport\u2019s respect code of conduct could lead to compliance action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIn addition, the RESPECT Policy states coaches should not engage in public criticism of Match Officials. Coaches should conduct themselves at all times and in all situations in a way that demonstrates leadership, respect for the game of Rugby League and respect for all those that are involved in the game (including officials and referees).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-marker-percentage=\"100\">\u201cIn each of the above cases, the explanation for the sanction includes the following passage: Head Coaches have a responsibility to ensure their behaviour sets an example to all within the game, and, as such, any such misconduct should be dealt with more severely. Given your high profile within the game, the level of reach the comments made in the media and within the press have a detrimental impact to the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Super League coaching duo fined after refree comments<\/p>\n<p data-marker-percentage=\"100\">Burgess isn\u2019t the only one who\u2019s been disciplined by the RFL, with former Super League coaches Steve McNamara and Danny McGuire both fined \u00a32,000 and \u00a33,000 respectively.<\/p>\n<p data-marker-percentage=\"100\">Ex Catalans Dragons boss McNamara were made before and after Catalans\u2019 Challenge Cup semi-final defeat to Hull KR back in April.<\/p>\n<p data-marker-percentage=\"100\">McGuire\u2019s comments when Castleford Tigers head coach were made after their Super League defeat by Wigan Warriors on 28th June.<\/p>\n<p data-marker-percentage=\"100\">For both McNamara and McGuire, half of their fines have been suspended until the end of the 2026 season.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753331296_223_srl-logo.png\"\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Sam Burgess is currently under investigation by the RFL following comments made about match officials after their defeat&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":23634,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[35],"tags":[5903,101,56,54,55],"class_list":{"0":"post-23633","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-rugby","8":"tag-rugby","9":"tag-sports","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom","12":"tag-unitedkingdom"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23633","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=23633"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23633\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/23634"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=23633"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=23633"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=23633"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
