{"id":236657,"date":"2025-10-31T21:44:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T21:44:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/236657\/"},"modified":"2025-10-31T21:44:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T21:44:12","slug":"explore-the-milky-way-like-never-before-in-this-stunning-new-color-map-image","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/236657\/","title":{"rendered":"Explore the Milky Way like never before in this stunning new color map (image)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"5a6d7922-403a-4d5d-9f73-c1ef50f7a3d8\">Astronomers have unveiled the largest low-frequency radio color image of the Milky Way ever created, offering a sprawling cosmic panorama that reveals supernova remnants, stellar nurseries, pulsars and the intricate glow of gas and dust weaving through our galaxy\u2019s heart.<\/p>\n<p>Built from data collected by the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/42496-milky-way-reflection-moon-early-universe.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/42496-milky-way-reflection-moon-early-universe.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Murchison Widefield Array<\/a> (MWA) telescope in Western Australia, the image combines observations from two massive surveys \u2014 known as GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky MWA (GLEAM) and GLEAM-X (GLEAM eXtended) \u2014 to produce a portrait that is twice as sharp, 10 times more sensitive and twice as wide as its predecessor released in 2019, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.icrar.org\/gleam-x-galactic-plane\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.icrar.org\/gleam-x-galactic-plane\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a statement<\/a> from the International Centre of Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This vibrant image delivers an unparalleled perspective of our <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15680-galaxies.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15680-galaxies.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">galaxy<\/a> at low radio frequencies,&#8221; Silvia Mantovanini, a PhD student from ICRAR\u2019s Curtin University team and lead author of the study, said in the statement. &#8220;It provides valuable insights into the evolution of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stars<\/a>, including their formation in various regions of the galaxy, how they interact with other celestial objects and ultimately their demise.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:66.67%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/RzwAbhaknRYbtkTWD6LcST.jpg\" alt=\"A red-brown field stretches to a horizon of low trees beneath a blue cloudy sky. (Image credit: ICRAR\/UWA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"e1f0b94a-fe35-4e2c-8ec4-bea5230db913\">Over 18 months, the team used about one million computing hours at the Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre in Australia to process and merge data from the two surveys into the final image, cataloging nearly 100,000 radio sources.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"e1f0b94a-fe35-4e2c-8ec4-bea5230db913-1\">The map \u2014 a full, zoomable version of which you can find <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.icrar.org\/gleam-x-galactic-plane\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.icrar.org\/gleam-x-galactic-plane\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">here<\/a> \u2014 captures a wide range of radio wavelengths, or &#8220;colors&#8221; of radio light across the Southern Galactic Plane, offering an unprecedented look at the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milky Way<\/a>&#8216;s hidden structure. By observing the galaxy in low-frequency radio light, astronomers can peer through the dense clouds of dust and gas that block visible wavelengths, exposing <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6638-supernova.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6638-supernova.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supernova<\/a> remnants \u2014 the immense, expanding shells of gas and radiation that mark the explosive death of a star \u2014 and regions of ionized gas where new ones are being born.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can clearly identify remnants of exploded stars, represented by large red circles,&#8221; Mantovanini said in the statement. &#8220;The smaller blue regions indicate stellar nurseries where new stars are actively forming.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This expansive <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/14249-milkyway-galaxy-photos.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/14249-milkyway-galaxy-photos.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">view of the Milky Way<\/a> may also shed new light on pulsars \u2014 rapidly spinning <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22180-neutron-stars.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22180-neutron-stars.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">neutron stars<\/a> whose powerful radio pulses and unpredictable behavior remain a mystery, the researchers said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>The newly released image is fully interactive.
