But when it comes to stargazing, one of these ghostly wanderers is more trick than treat!<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" data-before-rewrite-redirect=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/53-comets-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Comets<\/a> are composed of primordial matter left over from the creation of our <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a> \u2014 and others \u2014 which become active as they approach <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a>, as the increase in heat radiation causes icy materials to transform into a gaseous shell around the nucleus. (Image credit: Chris Schur)<\/p>\n<p id=\"59d654fd-136e-49f6-8d05-3f74920b3872\">Whilst it&#8217;s possible to view Comet Lemmon with the naked eye, a pair of 10X50 binoculars or even a modest backyard telescope will help reveal the sunlight reflecting from the icy wanderer&#8217;s central coma and magnificent, elongated tail.<\/p>\n<p>Comet Lemmon will be positioned low on the western horizon, embedded among the stars of the constellation <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21759-ophiuchus.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21759-ophiuchus.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ophiuchus<\/a> in the hours following sunset on Oct. 31. After locating the constellation, use your smartphone astronomy app to pinpoint the stars Kappa Ophiuchi and Epsilon Ophiuchi. Zamani (NSF NOIRLab))<\/p>\n<p id=\"576ca2f0-9ad2-4901-96f8-093356928c64\">3I\/ATLAS made its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/you-wont-see-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-zoom-closest-to-the-sun-on-oct-30-but-these-spacecraft-will\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/you-wont-see-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-zoom-closest-to-the-sun-on-oct-30-but-these-spacecraft-will\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">closest approach to the sun<\/a> \u2014 an event known as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-perihelion\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-perihelion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">perihelion<\/a> \u2014 on Oct. 30 and has a current approximate magnitude of just +11, placing it well below the light detection threshold of the unaided human eye. (Image credit: Created by Anthony Wood in Canva)<\/p>\n<p id=\"d7c835ce-23e4-451b-8cea-f645d69b7e32\">On Halloween night, 3I\/ATLAS will be positioned close to the rocky planet <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/44-venus-second-planet-from-the-sun-brightest-planet-in-solar-system.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/44-venus-second-planet-from-the-sun-brightest-planet-in-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venus in<\/a> the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17021-virgo-constellation.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17021-virgo-constellation.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">constellation Virgo<\/a>, which will rise highest in the hour preceding dawn on Nov. 1, bathed in the glow of the rising sun. (Image credit: Chris Schur)<\/p>\n<p id=\"c89eb166-3c85-4d4d-aaad-063690a2fd64\">SWAN&#8217;s brightness is currently on the decline following its close brush with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a> on Oct. 21. Its estimated magnitude of 7.2 renders it too dim to be spotted with the naked eye, though a pair of 10X50 binoculars or a small backyard telescope will help reveal the hazy reflected light centered around its icy nucleus shining against the blackness of space. However, the light of the 76%-lit moon will present an added challenge to spotting the comet on the night of Oct. 31<\/p>\n<p>Look to the southern horizon in the hours following sunset on Halloween to find <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a> glowing among the stars of the constellation Aquarius. Next, locate the bright magnitude 3 stars Sadalmelik and Sadalsuud, which form the shoulders of the &#8220;water bearer&#8221; depicted in the stellar formation.
